Latvia is a small country with a past not unlike that of its neighboring Baltic countries.  Despite this it is undoubtedly a place with its own history and culture.

I will spend 5 days in Riga, 1 day in Cesis, and 2 days in Sigulda.  With a buffer this equals 10 days in Latvia.
Latvia
                                                            Riga

Riga is located on the site of an ancient Liv settlement.  The modern town was founded by German traders, mercenaries, and religious crusaders.  In 1190 an Augustinian monastery was built.  Then in 1201 Riga was granted town rights.  Soon it became the gateway to the Baltics and Russia.  In 1282 the town joined the Hanseatic League.  This gave the city economic and political stability.  In 1522 Riga accepted the reformation and ended the power of the arch bishops.  By 1581 the city was no longer part of the Holy Roman Empire, but rather part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.   During the 30 Years war it was held by Sweden.  By 1710 the town was mostly self-governed.  This ended in 1721 when Riga was annexed to Russia.  Soon it became an industrial city.  On November 18, 1918 Latvia declared its independence.  Between the wars Riga was referred to as the Paris of the north.  During WWII the city was occupied by both the Nazis and the Soviets.  Due to the Nazis almost one third of Latvians were killed.  After the war the Soviets took control.  On August 21, 1991 Latvia declared its independence from the Soviet Union.  Today it is a city rich in history.
