| Hostels: Highlight or Horror? | |||||||
| Over the years I have stayed in dozens of hostels all over Europe. In the future I hope to say in dozens more all over the world. I could spend hours telling you about the tent in Munich where everyone got a piece of floor for about 6 euros each, or the naked Aussie wandering the halls in Saltzburg. Staying a hostel can really affect how much fun you have on your trip. It's a great place to meet other travelers experiencing the same things that you are. I've always found it interesting how quickly you can became close to fellow travelers, even when you know you will never see them again or even keep in touch. Still, there are some horror stories of hostels. Do you have one? The following lists area few things that I have learned while hosteling, hopefully, it will make everyones trip a bit more fun and much more restful. | |||||||
| Do: 1. Greet your fellow travelers. 2. Prepare for leaving the night before when departing early in the morning. 3. Keep your hands off of others belongings. 4. Proceed quietly when the lights are off and others are sleeping. 5. Be aware that there are others in the room with you and that how you act is a representation of your country. 6. Mark your bed in some manner when you arrive so that you won't find someone sleeping in it later. Don't: 1. Turn on the light while others are sleeping, I don't care what you need to see. 2. Crinkle plastic bags in the morning while others are sleeping. 3. Run up and down the halls screaming or singing like a crazy drunk. 4. Talk on your cell phone while others are sleeping (this seems like a given, but is not). 5. Make a discusting mess in the bathrooms, you don't live here! 6. Don't steal a bed already taken. When it comes down to it the secret to happy hostel living is to be aware that there are others in the room with you. |
