Thank you By Peter Glover
Thank you for standing by my gravestone friend,
Thank you for standing to look,
If I'd survived the blood and guts,
I would have written a book.

Thank you for standing by my gravestone friend,
As thousands before have done,
I died at six as I recall, at the going down of the sun.
Nineteen years and two days old,
not much to show for life,
What started as an adventure, made a widow of my wife.

At first I was honoured to serve my King,
as we all marched off to war,
I knew not what this life would bring,
with horrors not seen before.

I worked on roads before I joined,
and then I volunteered.
My mates and I marched down the street,
the whole town, they all cheered.

Then off to Foreign fields we went,
When training all was done,
We thought this war would be short
making a safer world for everyone.
Assembly Horseguards Parade
I speak to you and all concerned.
for all my chums that died.
From many, many nations,
Throughout the whole world wide.
Thank you for standing at my graveside
friend.
