I remember when I found the demo (I went through a little demo crush- I just got the internet...) I tried it out, and I think "Hmmm I'm not so crazy about this..." Of course I picked UFP, and I couldn't hit crap LOL. The Klingon always won. A couple more demos, & it was forgotten. Months later, I get around to cleaning things up, and I find it again "Oh- I remember this!" I actually take some time and try to understand how it works, and "Hey- I gotta get this game!"
December 1999 rolls around, and it's in my hands :)
I play through the tutorials, and try out the Campaign. What a fun game this was turning out to be :)
Then there's one selection which seemed to be calling out to me..."MULTIPLAYER"
Up 'til now, I've been pretty busy, and had an excuse to put this off. I gather up my courage, sign up on MPlayer, and begin playing online the day after Christmas as Dorrant. My first surprise comes quickly, and I have to ask "What the heck is BPV?"
A few months go by. I'm playing this thing almost every night now. I resist the odd request to join a fleet, I figure I wanna put some time in first. Besides, 'til now, I haven't gotten close to anyone yet. Until I met 9th Cutman. Here was someone I kept running into, and was actually glad to see me again LOL. I make up my mind I wanna join a fleet- he says to call Admiral Ghis. Heh...never heard of this guy, but I mail him my request. Next thing you know, I'm a member of 9th Fleet, and holy moly this is like a whole new world! I get some training documents sent to me, a run-down on their medals system, & I'm thinking "Wow, what an operation!" I got to know Kakarot, Canuck, Nannerslug, Thrain, Tarses, Clarky, Thomas, Arkansas, Thursday, Zarthur, Scott Bernard, Fubar, Lord Golem, and Reprisal. Eventually, they would be as brothers to me. Over the next year, through trials and tribulations, hard work and heart ache, I was promoted to Commodore. My friend Cutman had suffered a heart attack, which pretty well ended his service. I remember the last time I saw him online, months after. We had a team game, versus a pair of NT's. His last SL game was a victory. 9th had slowly moved away from SL matches, and campaigns had become the main focus. By April 2001, there wasn't much of a 9th Fleet left. After a tough decision, I bid farewell.
I needed a change, and I figured a change of name was a good start. Krieger got to start off all alone, just like Dorrant did. AFCUB had started a campaign, & I signed up as a Merc named Krieger SOF. While waiting for things to get rolling, I signed up with RAGE. There I met Cyberbeer, Jireh, Wraith, and the others. Unfortunately, RAGE was pretty well drying up then. And Cyber was getting...unusual...I lasted 2 months, and parted. The AFCUB campaign fell through, & I was out of a job. For a while, I kinda laid back. I tried out the DV2, wondered what the fuss was all about, tried some patch testing, and decided I wanted a whole new start. A Gorn named Komodo was born. I did a whole lot of research, collected information, and created Tooth and Nail, dedicated to those who served the Confederacy. There was a regeneration of interest in improving the Gorn state of affairs. The next patch came through with many improvements.
By then, I noted a new Gorn fleet had been formed at SL- Red Talon. I had been trying to decide if I wanted to go to KEG, or GE. At the time, both looked pretty well dead. Aug 15th, 2001, I took the plunge, and called up RT Damian, and bing bang boom I was RT Komodo. I was in for a surprise though. RT at SL was just the tip of the iceberg of the whole of RT. This wasn't just a Gorn fleet, but a fleet much like GFL or XC, with all races being represented. Over the next few months, people kept getting angry, and retiring. The oddest thing to me was I never heard WHY. The leadership fractured, vanished, or just didn't lead. This didn't go well in the long run. Making plans, and carrying them out go hand in hand...this didn't happen. I tried to revive League activity- it seemed that was all that was left. I was given authority as Rank 10, and tried my darndest to get what was left of us into GZ. Two weeks after, I had lost all interest in a fleet that had lost interest in itself, and resigned as well.
It was now about Jan 15, 2002. I was just thinking of trying to start a new Gorn fleet, since there weren't too many, and the call had gone out. I had a backup plan to join RTS with Ael Aidoann (formerly SHG Shogun) as he & I had gotten chummy. Not more than half an hour goes by, and DIF Shogun pays me a visit. Due to his persuasiveness, I decide to join up with DIF. So there I am, a Gorn back in a Fed fleet. It was the best thing I had in a LONG time. Most members were active (and still are), and there was always someone online when I was. I got to serve with my old buddy Wraith again too :) I got to help & try to fight off ICOP in the points race, and it was a close one! It was an honour to be in a fleet that had that much spirit! Problem was, I was getting back my old frustrations of playing Fed. I just never learned to be agressive enough. At the beginning of April, I bid farewell to DIF, to join my Gorn brothers in CB. And here I am today :) I only wish I had more time to put in online, but I continue to do my best.
