What is TWM?
TWM (The Weapon Mutator) is nothing more than a small Mutator for UT2003, that slightly changes some weapons in order to
gain a better gameplay. The idea of TWM arose in the growing discussions in the UT2003 scene about what makes UT2003 less enjoable than other shooters - after of 3/4 year of playing it!
This discussion experienced its climax in the mid-may '03 with columns like
Stevo's on ESReality.com.
Now the main problem was public pronounced and everyone had to face it: Weaponbalance.
During those persistent "fight" in the scene - either to change or to keep the game as it is-, several people decided and started to create a weapon mutator. So did I :)
Initially my
version was only meant to be played in private, with my teammates from sQuad Damage. Since I had little contact to 4k^Stevo via ESR, I also contacted him on IRC and told about
the progress of my (still) unnamed mod. As he liked the current state of it, I decided to show it some other players, now in the german scene.
I got in contact with
ocr*pAkmAn, who - as i send him the latest built - mutated into the most important supporter back in those days. He provided me with many suggestions, used it in a few 4on4
training matches with his teammates and last but not least helped to get the mutator into the hands of many european topplayers.
As we distributed the now called TWM among the scene and as it gains allowance by many great players, we could finally get in negotiations with
TTM-pakman, who got interested in this small mutator and the goal was reached, when he released his
TTM v2.2 on the 11th June '03 - together with the first and official version of TWM.
Since this day, TWM gained more and more acceptance from the UT2003 community. Many (inter)national online leagues (ESport League - ESL, Unreal Liga Deutschland - ULD etc.) and LAN tournaments like the eSport World Cup took The Weapon Mutator officially (on the 18th June 03) into their ruleset.
Here's what some the world's best UT2003 players think of TWM:
