| Jean grew up in Marshalltown and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1982 she came to Iowa City. Jean has many family members and a lot of memories with all of them. Before Jean retired she was a Registered Nurse at the Veterans Hospital and also at University Hospitals and Clinics in the neurology department. In her free time she enjoys sewing and reading. Through RSVP, Jean is currently reading books on tape for elementary school students. She has participated in the Pen Pals and Partners in Reading programs as well. In 1997, Jean won the Iowa City Human Rights Award for her service to the community. She decided to become a volunteer because she was a sickly child and people always helped her and her family. Volunteering is Jean's way of giving back to the community that helped her. Jean has been an RSVP volunteer for 12 years. Through this program she has connected with people of all ages. Jean thrives on helping others and connecting with youth. "I like to know what younger people are thinking. I find that they're concerns and dreams aren't any different from mine! I like to give children a little glimmer of what is on the other side!" She has shared her love of writing and love of life with many generations through her work in the RSVP program. She really likes how the children remember her years later. Her favorite memories from volunteering have been the friendships she has made with the children. |
