| Don grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He came to Iowa City in 1966 because of a job opportunity at the University of Iowa. He has a Ph.D in Microbiology and was a professor at the University for 34 years. Don has two daughters and five grandchildren. In his free time Don enjoys reading non-fiction. Through RSVP, Don is a Rock & Reader, a tutor at the Kirkwood Learning Center and a driver for Meals on Wheels. He decided to volunteer because, "it is good to continue to contribute instead of being a sponge and absorbing it all." Don enjoyed reading to his grandchilden, and Rock & Read allows him to help other children develop a love for reading. He finds volunteering very rewarding and has been volunteering for four years. Don has one special memory from Rock & Read. Once a heavy set man was reading at the elementary school at the same time he was. For some reason a rumor started among the first graders that the man was Santa Claus and he was soon surrounded by children. He enjoys watching children become excited about learning. Don finds volunteering fulfilling because it contributes to the lives of others by showing them they are loved and respected. |
