After growing up in West Liberty and moving away for a short while, Betty has lived in West Liberty over 40 years. Betty and her husband Lyle have four children and seven grandchildren that keep them busy. Before retiring, Betty worked as a teacher and an office manager for her son-in-law in Iowa City. She started volunteering with RSVP when the program was first initiated in West Liberty.
Her teaching background has made her the perfect volunteer for the Rock & Read program at West Liberty Elementary School. When Betty is not volunteering at the elementary school, she is serving as the president of the Woman's Club in West Liberty. In her spare time she enjoys playing bridge, making greeting cards and traveling to Lake Tahoe and the sunny beaches of Southern California.
Her passion for teaching and children drew Betty to the volunteer opportunities in the schools. She feels that volunteering gets you out and gives you the opportunity to make a contribution to the community. Betty realizes that because of the budget cuts in the West Liberty School District, volunteers can provide an extra resource that is greatly needed. She feels that working with kids can also give you a different perspective. One of her favorite memories as a volunteer was while helping a young boy with a math concept. The boy got so excited after mastering the math problem that he gave her a high-five! Thanks to Betty for being such a caring and committed volunteer at West Liberty Elementary! |
