is a fine short play by the German Playwright, Berthold Brecht. The scene is set in Spain during the war when the people were rising up against the Generals. (Unfortunately, history tells us that the Generals won this war.) A typical small-town Spanish family is depicted, in which the mother tries to prevent her children from "joining up" against the Generals because this is what her husband did and he was killed earlier. Her brother, however (described by Brecht as The Worker), is in charge of one unit of the uprising and is constantly on the lookout for new recruits. He also knows that, unless his side gets ammunition, weapons and a place to hide, the uprising is going to be hopeless. The main story centers upon his visit to his sister's home and how, ultimately, she agrees not only to send her younger son to the war, but joins up herself! I played The Worker (Mrs Carrar's brother).
