Mario, or Mr. Average guy I like to call him, is the main man in the game. You should try him first. He's not too different from SSB, but he is still very good overall. Strongest Move- Headbutt (Smash Up+A. Can be charged) Strength- 5/10 Defense- 5/10 Speed- 5/10 Overall- 5/10 New Moves that are not the N64 Smash Bros: *Fire Punch (Smash Forward+A) *Cape (B+Forward, used as a reflector) *Slam Dunk (A+Forward in midair) Mario is pretty good to use in SSB. He's excellent for the Adventure Mode. Some of Mario's Special costumes are his Wario suit and Super Mario 2 suit.

Donkey Kong is one of my favorite characters to use. He is way improved from SSB. He has a whole new set of moves, more strength and so on! Strongest Move- Wind-Up Punch (B) Strength- 9/10 Defense- 9/10 Speed- 4/10 Overall- 7/10 New Moves: *Ground Headbutt (B+Forward) *Head Smash (Smash Forward+A) *Single Foot Stomp (Down+A in midair) Donkey Kong is the best character to use in any Multi-Man Melee. He's a good choice for Adventure and Classic mode.

Way imroved from SSB, Link is the 2nd best character for the Multi Man Melee, behind Donkey Kong. The Spinning Slash is almost 2X stronger than in SSB. Strongest Move- Spinning Slash (Up+B) Strength- 6/10 Defense- 7/10 Speed- 4/10 Overall- 6/10 New Moves: *Bow & Arrow (B, can charge up) *Double Power Slash (Smash Forward +A, then press Z or A while he is swinging.) *(Z, Down)- If you watch this move in slow motion, Link gives his opponent an Elbow Drop! Link's Double Power Slash can usually counter may attacks. Try it sometime in VS Mode. It's very useful. His special costumes are a Goron Tunic, and a Zora Tunic.

Samus is about the same from SSB but equipped with new moves and now has a Screw Attack that is not as effective as the old one. Samus is filled with alot of gunpower now. Strongest Move- Blaster (B, can charge up) Strength- 5/10 Defense- 7/10 Speed- 5/10 Overall- 6/10 New Moves: *Homing Missile (B+Forward) Samus has a new set of throwing attacks with the Z button but are just about as strong as the old ones. Samus is a well balanced character to use just like Mario. Incredible defense.
Yoshi is very good to use. He still has all of his old moves and some edited moves but can screw up sometimes with his new moves. He is one of my favorite characters to use. Strongest Move- Hip-Hop Drop (Down+B) Strength- 5/10 Defense- 7/10 Speed- 6/10 Overall- 6/10 New Moves: *Egg Roll (B+Forward) Be careful not to fall off the stage! *Tail Whip (Back+A in midair) A very good choice to face Metal Mario. And Master Hand. Sometimes, his Double Jump will be disabled when attacked in the air. Yoshi can look like any Yoshi color you want.

I really hate Kirby, but I'll admit that he does have a few powerful attacks. He is a good choice to face Metal Mario and Master Hand. I think he is very annoying as a CPU. But as a player, he is just fine. Strongest Attack- Stone (Down+B) I call it the Stone Cold Stunner! Strength- 5/10 Defense- 3/10 Speed- 3/10 Overall- 4/10 New Moves: *Hammer (Forward+B) Very powerful attack. Kirby's Hammer attack can send anyone at any size away! That's the best thing about Kirby.

Fox McCloud is another character I like. He is equipped with new moves. He is very good to use any lightweight character. Strongest Move- Spinning Heel Kick (Smash Forward+A) I liked his old Smash attack better, which was the Dropkick. Strength- 4/10 Defense- 5/10 Speed- 9/10 Overall- 6/10 New Moves: *Spinning Heel Kick (Smash Forward+A) *Fox Illusion (B+Forward) Be careful not to fall off the stage! Fox does have a weaker gun. And his Fire Fox is different. He used to fall with him looking like he was smelling his knees, which I liked better. Now he falls like he'll splash on someone.

Pikachu is just as good as he was before and his voice is louder than ever. I've noticed his voice changed at the Indigo league to the Johto league. It's more loud than ever. Strongest Move- Thunder (Down+B) Useless at Infinite Glacier arena. Strength- 5/10 Defense- 4/10 Speed- 7/10 Overall- 5/10 New Moves: *Skull Bash (Forward+B, can charge up) Pikachu's costumes include Ash Ketchum's hat, Pikachu's SSB Party hat, and a miscellanious green hat. He is very good to use in places like the Clasic Mode.

Captain Falcon is still that damn fast and is WAY improved! He is one of the best characters in the game! In Event Match #36, he is almost impossible to beat. Strongest Move- Falcon Punch (B) Strength- 8/10 Defense- 6/10 Speed- 10/10 Overall- 8/10 New Moves: *Raptor Boost (Forward+B) Almost impossible to counter. *Double Elbow Smash (Smash Forward+A) I liked the old smash attack on the N64 better. Captain Falcon is just AWESOME! His special costumes are as Blood Falcon from F-Zero X and one of his costumes looks like Space Ghost from Cartoon Network.

Ness is hard to use sometimes. People called him the best character in SSB. But he's not that anymore. To me, he's gone down. He's just as light as Pikachu and doesn't win as often. Strongest Move- PK Thunder Boost (Up+B. I used to call it the Keester Whammie. I don't know what gave me that idea.) Strength- 5/10 Defense- 4/10 Speed- 2/10 Overall- 4/10 New Moves: *PK Flash (B, can charge up and able to move it) Super effective against lightweights! *Fists to Electricity- Ness' running attack and A+Forward in midair are upgraded into some electric fist attacks! Ness's special costume is a black & yellow shirt that sort of looks like Charlie Brown!

NEWCOMERS
I'm a big fan of Bowser. He is the largest guy in the game. He is one of the best characters in the game and can sometimes defeat people with one hit! Strongest Move- Power Headbutt (Smash Forward+A) The strongest forward smash attack of them all. Strength- 10/10 Defense- 10/10 Speed- 3/10 (He kind of runs like a Speedboat or something) Overall- 8/10 Special Moves: *Fire Breath- (B) It won't last too long. Use it in places like walls or open spaces. *Koopa Klaw (B+Forward) Use can use this if you're not good at grabbing your opponent. *Bowser Bomb-(B+Down) Just like Yoshi's Hip-Hop Drop, but slower and stronger!
BOWSER

Peach is an okay character to use. She can jump real high and has many interesting attacks. If there's any female superstar in SSB, try her. And you'll see that she's better than she looks. Strongest Move- Peach Bomber (Forwrad+B) Very slow but strong. One of the funniest moves in the game. Strength- 5/10 Defense- 3/10 Speed- 3/10 Overall- 4/10 Special Moves: *Toad-(B) Used to counter attacks. *Random Hardcore Weapon-(Smash Forward+A) Peach will use either a Frying Pan, a Golf Club, or a Tennis Racket as a hardcore weapon! *Vegetable-(B+Down) A good move to use when attacking from a distance. Peach's special costumes are as Daisy from Mario Party 3. People also think Peach looks like a nurse in another costume.

The Ice Climbers have never been seen for 16 years. Now they've come to SSB Melee. They are very small and light but when together, their attacks are twice as strong. Try having 4 sets of Ice Climbers in VS Mode! Strongest Move- Blizzard (Down+B) Can freeze opponent sometimes. Goes in both directions when both Ice Climbers are in. Strength- 2/10 Defense- 4/10 Speed- 5/10 Overall- 4/10 Special Moves: *Double Glacier Throw- (B) One Glacier is thrown when one of them is KOd. *Hammer Swing- (Forward+B) Not very effective but good for short distances. You can switch to Nana instead of Popo when swiching costumes.

One of the best female characters in the game. She has lots of magic. In the Pay Per Views in the SSB Wrestling page, her Down+B attack has not been discovered yet. But it will eventually. Strongest Move- Din's Fire (Forward+B) Hold B to move the fire around and release when ready to fire. Strength- 2/10 Defense- 3/10 Speed- 3/10 Overall- 3/10 Special Moves: *Narue's Love- (B) I have not found out much of this attack yet. I think it can reflect attacks. *Farores Wind- (B+Up) Zelda can warp very high from the ground. Very good recovering move.

Marth is one tough Japanese guy to handle with. He has very strong attacks but he usually misses attacks. He is one of the best characters to use in the 15 Minute Man Melee. Strongest Move- Shield Breaker (B) Hold B to charge and release to bring out the energy stored at your opponent. Strength- 5/10 Defense- 7/10 Speed- 6/10 Overall- 6/10 Special Moves: *Dancing Blade- (Forward+B) After pressing Forward+B, Press B about every 1/3 of a second to keep the attack going. *Counter- (Down+B) If the opponent punches you during this move, it will do no damage, and you will attack him automatically. Very good to use in the 100-man Melee if you've been surrounded by wiremen. Marth is my favorite of the human-like characters. I always picture him being a bully.

Young Link has few differences to Link himself. His attacks are somewhat stronger. But he is very easy to knock off. Young Link is a clone of Link. He has the exact same moves but are a little different. I have not discovered if he uses a Hookshot or not. But I'll put it up if I see something with that. Strength- 6/10 Defense- 4/10 Speed- 5/10 Overall- 5/10 Overall, I think Link is better than Young Link, even though the hidden characters are supposed to be the best. Out of all the lightweights, Young Link is one of the best.
![]() |
Pichu is related to Pikachu in species and has the same moves as him. But when he uses electric attacks, he gives damage to himself though. I believe he is the smallest character in the game. Has the same moves as Pikachu. Strength- 4/10 Defense- 2/10 Speed- 7/10 Overall- 4/10 Pichu has 2 taunts with the top control pad button. It depends on which direction you are facing. He really doesn't have any special costumes.

What would Melee be like without Ganondorf? He is probably the most powerful villian in Nintendo History. Having him teamed up with Bowser would be awesome to see! He is probably he best character for the Home Run Contest. Strongest Move- Warlock Punch (B) Very similar to the Falcon Punch, but slower and stronger. It is the most devastating move in the game. Strength- 10/10 Defense- 9/10 Speed- 3/10 Overall- 7/10 Special Moves: *Electric Dive- (Up+B) Exactly the same as the Falcon Dive but does more damage. *Explosive Axe Kick- (Lightly press up+A) Another strong move but very slow. About 3/4 the strength of the Warlock Punch.
![]() |
Falco is slower and heavier than his friend, Fox McCloud. He can jump very high though. As a CPU, he seems to be hard to defeat. His Blaster gun is slower but stronger. Strongest Move- Spinning Heel Kick (Smash Forward+A) Strength- 5/10 Defense- 5/10 Speed- 4/10 Overall- 5/10 Special Moves: *Blaster- (B) Stronger than Fox's Blaster. *Falco Phantasm- (B+Forward) Not as far as Fox's but deals more damage. *Fire Bird- (B+Up) Same as Fox's Fire Fox attack.

Roy's Strongest move can be an instant KO. The best way to do it is to first sends your opponent far from you. From there, just hold B until the opponent gets close enough to you. Then release and your opponent will fly! But if you hold B too long, you'll lose 10%. Strongest Move- Flare Blade- (B) Hold B to charge up and release to attack. Strength- 8/10 Defense- 5/10 Speed- 6/10 Overall- 6/10 Special Moves: *Double-Edge Dance- (B+Forward) Same as Marth's Dancing Blade. *Blazer- (Up+B) One of the best moves to use in Cruel Melee. *Counter- (Down+B) Same as Marth's Counter Roy used to remind me of Gary Oak despite the hairstyle. I know, lots of cartoon characters from Japan have spiked hair. Roy is one of them.

When I first head who the original characters were, not the secret characters, I thought Luigi was not going to be in SSBM. I'm glad he is. He is one of the best in the N64 SSB. He had purple overalls, now he's back to blue. Strongest Move- Flaming Uppercut- (Up+B) Must make contact with opponent to deal more damage. Strength- 6/10 Defense- 4/10 Speed- 4/10 Overall- 5/10 New Moves: *Green Missile- Almost the same as Pikachu's Skull Bash. There is a 1/8 chance of a very powerful missile attack. Try not to fall off the stage. Luigi's special costume is his Fire Flower Suit.
![]() |
Just like Luigi, I thought Jigglypuff was gone also. I'm glad both are in. And Jigglypuff is much improved compared to the N64. Her moves are stronger and deal more damage. Strongest Move- Sleep Attack- (Down+B) Like Luigi's Flaming Uppercut, must make contact with opponent to deal damage. Best for Event Match #51. Strength- 5/10 Defense- 2/10 Speed-4/10 Overall- 4/10 Special Moves: *Rollout- (B) Hold B to charge up. Release when flashing and the opponent will possibly be KOd. Try this is "Race to the finish" to cut off time. Jigglypuff has a few more costumes than the N64, like the crown costume.

Mewtwo will probably take you the longest to unlock in SSBM. Unless you have 4 controllers, it will take you 4X quick. Mewtwo is very easy to defeat as a CPU, but when you try him out, he's better than you think. Strongest Move- Shadow Ball- (B) First press B. Eventaully, Mewtwo will be at maximum power when charging up. You can evade by using the control stick. The next time you press B, Mewtwo will release a ton of power at his opponent. Strength- 4/10 Defense- 4/10 Speed- 5/10 Overall- 4/10 Special Moves: *Teleport- (Up+B) This is very useful when fighting Master Hand. Use it to evade just before Master Hand crushes you. *Disable- (Down+B) If you're facing Yoshi and he decides to use his Egg Roll attack, you can stop his path and stun him before he hits you! Mewtwo may not be the best character, but at least he is added to your roster. He's one of my favorites, personally.

Last, but not least, Mr. Game & Watch. Once you get Mewtwo, Finish Classic mode with everyone. At the end, Mr. Game & Watch will be your last opponent. Beat him and he's yours. Strongest Move- Oil Panic- (Down+B) This is to protect you from projectiles. Once a projectile hits you, it will go in your bucket. Fill it 3 times and then you can dump it on your opponent! As a CPU, G&W never uses this move. Strength- 7/10 Defense- 4/10 Speed- 5/10 Overall- 5/10 Special Moves: *Judgement- (B+Forward) You'll geta number when you hit your opponent. The higher, the stronger. You'll be lucky if you get 9! Mr. Game & Watch can be in many colors. See for yourself when you unlock him.

Use (Down+B) as Zelda and you turn to Shiek. Shiek is way improved from Zelda. So Zelda's Overall rating is actually higher when you combine these 2. Shiek is hard to defeat as a CPU. Strongest Move- Double Kick (Smash Forward+A) A good move against someone who is equipped with a Super Mushroom or Metal Block. Strength- 5/10 Defense- 7/10 Speed- 7/10 Overall- 6/10 Special Moves: *Chain- (B+Forward) You can control the chain if you hold B and then use the control stick. Whenever Shiek jumps, it sounds like she says "Toot!"
