From Nevelle Owen Nebeker:
Served three tours in the Revolutionary War
1- 1st week of September, found with Captain Daniel Cone's militia company.- Long Island New York 1776-1777
2- Captain Amos Jones's Militia. From Colchester to Hartford and Albany to Saratoga joining Col. Lattimer's regiment during the battle of Saratoga. One of the most significant battles of the war, and where and when Brittish General Burgoyne surrendered, laying down the Brittish Arms-17 Oct 1777 (the depleted army of about 6000 men stacked its weapons along the west bank of the Hudson river. After the surrender, Col Lattimer took his regiment to Albany where the men were discharged.
3- He was drafted in April 1778 into the United States service for two months and stationed at New London, Connecticut, and employed in building fortifications on the high ground west of Fort Trumbull. He was not there when Benedict Arnold attacked the Fort in Sep of 1781.
Joseph applied for his Revolutionary War Penssion on 7 Alug 1832 and received a retroactive pension of $21.66, for the period of 4 March 1831 through 3 Sep 1832, at which time, the pension became a widow's pension for Mary, until her death 12 August 1854.
Joseph died in East Haddam 3 Sep 1832 and his grave at the First Church Cemetary is listed in Graves of Revolutionary Patriots. (Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, by Patricia Law Hatcher)

"Bazaliel Gates was commissioned Ensign of the East Haddam, Conn. Second Company on May 9, 1771. At a town meeting on Dec. 7th 1778 he was chosen to serve on the committee to procure clothing for the soldiers in the Continental Army. Ensign Bazaliel Gates is the father of Bazaliel Gates Jr.
