234. Capt. John Colt Jr.
Dr. Gale Harris notes that John, Jr., was born about 1661 based on his gravestone in Duck River Cemetery at Old Lyme, Ct., (NEHGR 77[1923]:198. The place of birth is not known, but is probably Hartford, CT, where both his parents were living about a year before. Loomis lists three daughters without knowing their names or birthdates. Loomis does not list John, III, but Dr. Harris notes his will. Dr. Harris also notes that Homer Brainard presented a list of John Jr's children in TAG 14(1938):172-73 but the article is full of errors. There are certainly more children.
Notes from Peter Flint:
Captain John Colt was interred in Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme, New London County, Connecticut. He served in the Trainband as Ensign in1709, Lieutenant in 1717, Captain in 1723, and served as Deputy in theConnecticut General Assembly in 1712, 1718, 1719, 1722-1724,1726,1728-1731. He owned a house and lot of six acres at Podunk, he purchased of Samuel Olmsted, and other lands recorded as early as1691, and Joseph Colt purchased the house and six acres of John, at Podunk. At a meeting of the council, at Hartford, Sept. 1, 1675, JohnColt declared before them that "he was shot at yesterday by an Indian," and that another party of Indians were discovered near the north meadow in Hartford the last night. The council ordered the return of Major Treat and his troops forthwith to Hartford. This John Colt was in the list of freemen at Windsor, May 13, 1669.Captain Colt is the great-great-grandfather of Samuel Colt, theinventor of the modern revolver, and founder of the modern
1033. Jonathan Colt
COLT, JONATHAN, of Windsor, cordwainer, dec'd, and administration granted to Mathew Grant, for which he gave bonds as adm'r, April 2, 1711. Joseph, "his brother," and other brothers, refused to administer on his estate. The record also states that the inventory was taken on August 22, 1711. One of these recordes apparently has an incorrect date. Another inconsistency is that his widow was not mentioned in his will.
