John Callender

Removed in 1775 to Spencertown, and in 1803/4 to Burlington, Vt.

Biography 1990 Biography prepared by Frederick George Novy and Marguerite Novy Lambert, Elverson, Chester County, Pennsylvania
John Callender was born Mar. 17, 1740, Sheffield, Mass., the son of John and Mary (Smith) Callender; died Mar. 8, 1810, Shelburne, Vt., buried in East Cemetery, Spear St., Shelburne, Vt. About 1765 he married Rebecca Loomis, born Mar. 9, 1744, Sheffield, Mass., the daughter of Samuel and Catherine (Sexton) Loomis; died Mar. 8, 1810, Shelburne, Vt., buried East Cemetery, Spear St., Shelburne, Vt.
In Apr. 1774 Pliny Moore, son of Noahdiah and Anna (Loomis) Moore, age 15 years, began his Journal of Drink. In it he recorded the amount of liquor that he drank and with whom, in Spencertown, Great Barrington, and Sheffield. In Spencertown John Callender of "Uncle John" is mentioned as one with whom he had a dram in the morning in Uncle John's corn.
On July 28, 1776, from Spencertown, John Callender writes to Pliny Moore: "As to our company it stands as it use to and it is Not in the Power of the Devil To Brake it up for he has Done his Best and has Yielded. But they Will Not Let us have any Powder But we have Got a supply and no thanks To them. Our company Rais'd fifty Dollars etc."
John Calender or Kalender served as Lieutenant in the Rev. War, first June 16, 1778, in Albany Co. militia, 17th Reg., under Col. William B. Whiting, Capt. John Salisbury's company, and second as Lt. in "the Levies" July 1, 1780, under Col. Morris Graham, Capt. Bostwick company.
For his service in the Levies he received bounty land on Isle de la Motte, then considered part of New York in 1787 and which he sold in 1793.
In Albany Co., N. Y., tax list of 1779 (to pay for the war), Kings District, John Callender, listed as Capt. Salisbury's beat, pays £18 on his personal property.
By the terms of his father's will, dated Mar. 30, 1782, John received land in Nobleton, Albany Co. Nobleton became Hillsdale and is now part of Austerlitz Twp., Columbia Co.
A letter to Pliny Moore from John Callender is dated Feb. 13, 1791, Canaan, N. Y., then on Mar. 30, 1795, John Callender and his daughter, Rhoda Callender witness a deed for Caniel Castle, Burlington, Vt.
The 1800 Federal census, Vermont, Chittenden Co., Burlington, shows John Callender with a household of three males ages 16/26 years; one male over 45 years; one female 0/10; and one female over 45 years.
In 1802 John Callender of Burlington bought land from Daniel Castle, in Lot 101, on the Onion River.
In 1806 John Callender is on the list of those who voted.
In 1774 John Callender set up a leather "eskeme" and made leather breetches.
In 1782, in the will of Samuel Loomis, he gives to his daughter Rebecca Callender £20 and one-third of the household goods after the death of his wife, Katherine.
Note - Dr. Spencer W. Garwood mistakenly claimed Capt. Lt. John Callender of Bunker Hill fame as an ancestor. John Callender, who was cashiered after the Battle of Bunker Hill, was the son of Elizer Callender who petitioned for his exchange after he had re-enlisted as a private, and was taken prisoner. This John Callender never married and died Oct. 12, 1797, Alexandria, Va. He belonged to the Order of Cincinnati.
