124. Stephen Loomis Jr.

Notes from Occupation event: Farmer

In 1732, the taxable inhabitants of Windsor were divided into seven companies, each owning a township. The Torrington company are specified as "Matthew Allyn, Roger Wolcott, and Samuel Mather, Esq's, and others, of the town of Windsor, patentees of Torrington." The number of these persons was 136, and among them was Stephen Loomis, taxed œ38, 8 shillings. 5 ch'n.

He was deputy to General Court 1766-67.


127. Amos Loomis Sr.

He removed to Southampton, Mass., and was adopted by Mr. Nathaniel Curtiss in 1757. See Springfield Records, vol. Y, p. 726.

His will was dated Nov. 22, 1775, and after a long preamble stated, that he, Amos Loomis of Southampton, gave "To my wife Hannah Loomis the use of one third part of my Real Estate During The Term of her Natural Life and one third Part of my Personal Estate for her Sole Benefit and use forever. To my Grand Daughter Jerusha Loomis, Daughter of my son Amos Loomis deceased I give the sum of five shillings to be Paid Her by my Two Sons Asher and Shem as soon as conveniently may be after my Deceas. To my son Nathaniel Loomis I give the sum of Five Shillings to be paid him by my two sons above named. To the Heirs of my son Curtis Loomis deceased I give the said sum of Five Shillings to be paid to them equally by my two sons above named. To my Daughter Hannah Burt, wife of Noah Burt, I give the sum of Two Pounds to be Paid her by my said two sons above named. To my Daughter Esther Loomis I give the sum of Fourteen Pounds Ten Shillings to be paid her by my two sons above named as soon as may be after my Deceas, also one certain Feather Bed which she commonly used, and also the use of the North Room in the front Part of my House till her marryage and no Longer. Be it Remembered that the Above Named sum is given to my said Daughter, together with the Lawful Interest of the same till payment of the same * * * *

Also I give my said Daughter Esther the sum of Thirteen Pounds to be Paid her by my two sons above Named upon her marryage out of my Personal Estate of such Household Goods that she may want, that if she never marrys then the said Last mentioned sum is not to be Paid her till after the Deceas of my wife above Named. To my son Abisha Loomis I give and Devise the Lot of Land I Bought of Ezra Clark together with the Dwelling House upon the same to him the said Abisha his heirs etc. And to my two Sons Asher Loomis and Shem Loomis I give and Devise all the Residue and Remainder of my Estate both Real and Personal, that is to say all my Estate which I have not given to my wife for her use or Absolutely * * * * And also the Remainder of my Real Estate which I have given my s'd wife the use of, so soon as her Term therein is Expired, to have and to hold one moycty of all my sd Estate to him the sd Asher and his etc. * * *, and the other moyety to him the sd Shem, etc. * * *, they paying to their several Brothers and Sisters or the Heirs * * * *, and also pay my just and Honest Debts, Funeral Expenses and maintaining my said wife with things necessary during her natural Life.

And I constitute and Appoint my said two sons Asher and Shem Sole Executors of this my last Will, etc * *.

A codicil to this will was as follows:
Whereas since the making and Publishing of my Last Will and Testament Bearing Date, etc., my son Abisha Loomis has Deceased and the Bequest therein to him now remains unbequeathed unto any Person by his Death, I therefore would give and Dispose of the same in the following manner, v iz, To my son Asher Loomis I Give and Devise six Acres of Land in the Lot that I Bot of Ezra Clark to be taken upon the West side of the Road that leads to Ichabod Strong's House. to the County Road leading from Southampton to Springfield and the said six Acres is to be Adjoining to sd Road to thim the said Asher and his heirs, etc. To my son Shem Loomis six Acres of Land in said Lot Laying upon the East side of Road and Adjoining to sd Road to him and his Heirs forever. To my son Nathaniel Loomis I give and Devise Twelve Acres of Land in said Lot Laying upon the Eastern side of the Above six acres given to son Shem Loomis and Adjoining to the said six Acres to him the said Nathaniel, etc. All the Remaining Part of said Lot (described at length) with the Dwelling House, went to the sons Asher and Shem, one Moyety or half to each of t hem."

Entry in Wintonbury Church Records for 1802: "Eliakim Loomis April 15th in his 66th year of age, one of the town poor, pleurisy."


129. Sarah Loomis

Sarah Loomis reportedly had more than one husband, remarrying a number of times, but details are unknown. One source lists one of the husbands as a Mr. Willard.


Ebenezer Holman

After the death of his mother, he was raised by his uncle, Benjamin Roberts of Hartford. He died intestate. No issue.


133. Capt. Matthew Loomis Sr.

He was ensign, 1752; 1st Lieut, in invasion of Canada, 1758; Capt. 1761. One of his great-great-grandsons is Oliver Patridge Dickinson, of Chicago. IL He owned at least one slave, a negro man. See N. E . H. & Gen. Reg., Vol. LII.

During the Revolution, he was a second lieutenant in Col. Ward's regiment, which serviced with Washington for one year from 14 May 1776 at Fort Lee and White Plains, NY, and was in the battles of Princeton & Trenton (Connecticut Men in the Revolution, p. 109).


Rachel Wright

Rachel Wright Loomis died eleven days after the birth of their third child, Christiana, possibly due to complications during the delivery of the child.


Martha Perkins

At least one source states her surname was Lathrop. There is evidence that she was born Martha Perkins, daughter of Deacon Joseph Perkins (b: 21 Jun 1674 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts) and Martha Morgan (b: 20 Mar 1681 in New London, New London, Connecticut) and that she was married to (1) Thomas Todd and (2) Solomon Lothrop (b: 13 Dec 1706 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, m. 6 Feb 1729 in probably Norwich, New London, Connecticut) and then (3) to Capt. Matthew Loomis on 29 May 1739 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut.

140. Joseph Gates

Elizabeth had Joseph, b. 28 Dec. 1695; Elizabeth 23 May 1697; John, 20 Sept. 1698; Sarah, 20 Aug. 1700; Jonathan, 17 Dec. 1703; Susanna, 21 Sept. 1705; Jacob, 10 July 1708; Samuel, 29 Mar. 1710; and Patience, perhaps posthum. at least when bapt. 23 Mar. 1712, she is call. "a ch. of Joseph Gates's relict," but the careless town rec. marks her b. 31 Mar. of that yr. His wid. d. 17 Nov. 1759 in her 89th yr.

Order to distribute the estate To Elizabeth Gates, widow, 1-3 part of the real estate; to Joseph Gates, eldest son, his double portion of sd. estate; to Elizabeth, John, Sarah, Jonathan, Susannah, Jacob, Samuel and Patience Gates, the rest of the children, to each of them their single portion of id. estate. And appoint Capt. Thomas Gates, Mr. Daniel Brainard and Daniel Cone distributors. Also, this Court appoint Capt. Thomas Gates guardian to John Gates, 19 years of age, and Sarah Gates, 17 years of age, children of Joseph Gates decd.


662. Jacob Gates

His wife, Thankful, was adm. to Ch., in Haddam and from First Ch. in East Haddam, Feb 14, 1745/6. She died and he m. second in Millington in 1763, Mary Stewart. Mary was a member of Ch., in Millington in 1788. He d. in Millington June 20, 1789, "aged 80." A Colchester Probate record shows the name of his widow was Mary, but, as the estate was insolvent, the names of his children did not appear. She d. in M. Jan 20, 1793, aged 53 years.
