Volume 3, Page 591
I, Samuel Mather of Windsor, do make this my last will and testament: I give to my wife Hannah Mather the use of my house we now live in, together with lands adjoining and barn, even the whole tenement, if she shall see cause to dwell in the house and use and improve the same for her own use and benefit, so long as she shall remain my widow. She, my wife, is to keep the sd. house and fences about sd. tenement in good repair during the time she useth and improveth the same, so long as she shall remain my widow; and after that my will is that the sd. house and barn and tenements shall belong to my children and be distributed with my other estate amongst them. I give unto my wife Hannah Mather £100 in bills of credit or other goods at inventory price. I give unto my wife Hannah Mather one year's provision out of my estate after my decease, that is to say, meat and corn for herself and our children that are under age. My will is that my wife Hannah Mather shall also have all the lands, or ye lands which descendeth to her by the death of her father, except what we sold to Mr. Samuel Strong; also that my wife shall have two cows, to be for her and her heirs forever. And I give unto my three daughters, Hannah Mather, Lucy Mather and Elizabeth Mather, all my child bed ornaments, such as blankets, etc., commonly called christening garments, to them and to their heirs forever as a gift without price. I give unto my daughter Lucy Mather, as a gift, one certain piece of gold called Moider, which she useth to wear about her neck, to be to her use forever. I give unto my loving son Samuel Mather all my physicall books, with my chirurgicall instruments, as a gift to him. And also my will is that my son Samuel Mather shall have so much out of my estate as to make him equal with the rest of my children besides what I have bestowed upon him for his education. I give unto my children hereafter named, Samuel Mather, Timothy Mather, Nathaniel Mather, Eliakim Mather, Hannah Mather, Lucy Mather and Elizabeth Mather, all the remainder of my estate, both real and personal, not particularly disposed of in the aforementioned will, to them in equal parts with what some of them have already had, viz., Timothy Mather, which I have given him a decd of sale of Benjamin Gibbs's house, barn and land at Litchfield, bought of sd. Gibbs, and also another decd of sale which I have given him of land at Litchfield at the price of £80, for which I have received no satisfaction therefor, all which maketh £380 which he hath received already, which I intend shall be as part of his portion which must be included to make him equal with my other children. And Nathaniel Mather having had and received already the sum of £350 which I have given him by decd of gift already of the house and barn and land and orchard which I bought of Samuel Denslow, Jr., lying on the west side of the street in Windsor, he hath already received, which shall be included to make him equal with my other children. My will is that my son Eliakim Mather shall receive his portion when he arrives at the age of 21 years, and that the rest of my children that are under age shall receive their portions at the age of 21 years or upon marriage, to be to them and their heirs forever. My will and pleasure is, and it is my true intent and meaning,

yt all and each of my children share alike in my estate, including what they have already received as abovesd., to be to them and their heirs forever, except my granddaughter Abigail Wolcott, to whom I give only £10 money. My will and pleasure is and I appoint my wife and our brother-in-law, Mr. Samuel Strong, to be guardians to my children that are under age. My will is that my three sons, Samuel Mather, Timothy
Mather and Nathaniel Mather shall be my executors.

43. Ann Skinner

Dr. Harris notes that Ann Skinner was born about 1635, not "1639" as Loomis has it. Her age is given as 16 years in the inventory of her father's estate in Oct. 1651. Dr. Harris is currently (Aug 1998) conducting studies that should shed more light on sisters Ann and Mary.

John Colt Sr.

There is a lot of confusion on John Colt Sr.'s wives. Gale Ion Harris has written two articles that cover John Edwards and Joseph Fitch. These two articles, one in TAG, the other in NEHGR, seemingly unrelated, together give a very detailed, documented picture of John Colt Sr. and Jr. In particular, the NEHGR article gives considerable detail under the listing for Hester. There are also additions and corrections in NEHGR Vol. 150, April 1996, pages 215-216.

Dr. Harris also notes in a letter that a lot of information on the Colts was fictiously created to please Colt descendants. Statements that he arrived in 1638 are based on Royal R. Hinman's inventions in the mid-19th century and somehow on a misunderstanding of the record of the baptism in Hartford on 7 Feb. 1646 [/7] of Sarah, daughter of John Cole of Farmington. By some carelessness this record was misinterpreted to be for a daughter of John Colt. John Colt never had a daughter Sarah. The subsequent history of John Cole's daughter Sarah is known and there is no possibility that John Colt was her father.

Dr. Harris also cites the Great Migration Newsletter, 7 [Jan.-March 1998], 8, in demonstrating the error in assuming that John Colt arrived in New England on the Griffin in September 1633. John Colt, Sr.'s, origins and parentage are unknown (TAG 68:7 or NEHGR 150:215). He also had no third wife as was speculated.

The earliest record of John Colt Sr. is 5 June 1656 when he is found in a card game with some companions at Hartford. No specific record of his age survives.

John married Ann Skinner, dau. of John & Mary (Loomis) Skinner, b. 1635; appeared on a list of Windsor Freeman, 27 Apr 1703. He and Mary Skinner were employees of Joseph Mygatt, a weaver, who had received a license to sell strong liquors by retail. John Allyn's servant Ann Skinner was still single in Jun 1659 and probably that December. She evidently married John Colt soon afterward, she was his "wife" at Springfield, just North of Windsor and at Hartford during July 1663. (NER, April 1996, p. 215)

(Corrections): "John Edwards of Wethersfield, Connecticut" by Gale Ion Harris (145[1991]:317- 341). The following corrections are made by the author: 145: pp. 326, 329-30. John Colt was living and "of Windsor" as late as Sept. 1713 when he conveyed land at Podunk to his "dutiful son" Benjamin Colt of Windsor (Windsor Deeds, 3:182). A more recent study of the Fitch family shows that John Colt almost certainly did not have a third wife, Lydia Fitch, a possibility considered likely in the Edwards article. For a full discussion, see the article, "The Children of Capt Joseph and Mary (Stone) Fitch of Hartford and Windsor, Connecticut," The American Genealogist 68, [1993]:1-10.

This section was made a part of New London County by General Court, October 1697. This remained in force till Windham County was organized in North-Western Connecticut, May 1726. Tixhall Ensworth received one and a half shares of Canterbury public lands April 30, 1723. He died in 1727, the same year with Maj. James Fitch and the first pastor, Rev. Samuel Estabrook."
