CHEFFINS SALE RESULTS

A total of 325 Vintage and Classic Tractors were on offer at Cheffins most recent Cambridge Vintage Sale and a record 243 tractors found new homes. A large contingent of Irish buyers' ensured that the Cross-Channel hauliers were kept busy with one Irish haulier reporting that he had 7 loads to transport and at 4/5 tractors per load that was some 30 tractors going to the Emerald Isle.

With no less than 4 Ferguson Browns on offer some felt that this might have had a negative effect on prices, this was not to be. The first tractor of the day was a Ferguson Brown in original condition having been painted green sometime early on it's working life and fetched a healthy 8,600, shortly afterwards a brace of Ferguson Browns the first in barn stored condition made an impressive 6,100 and the other incomplete and in poor condition was sold for a remarkable 3,400.

With the last of the Ferguson Browns a working example but with incorrect rear wheels making 10,600 it was to be a most rewarding day for their respective vendors.

With many of the best tractors featuring early in the sale, bidding was brisk and prices strong. Other notable prices were the well restored Field Marshall Series IIIA 11,300, the concourse Ford 3000 which made an astonishing 9,400, the Massey Ferguson 35 which was an exceptional restoration at 6,400. A Fordson E27N P6 which again was well restored fetched a record 6,200 the Stablemate to the 2 Ferguson Brown tractors the Austin R in very much as found condition was sold at 4,400 to a restorer with time on his hands!

Overall the tractor trade was as strong as we have seen it with prices up by an average 20%. It was notable that the best prices were paid for the excellent restoration or the very good ex-farm tractors as in the case of the Fordson Dexta which was sold for 4,400.

Over 75% of tractors entered found new homes, even some of the basket cases at the end of the sale were sought after although they are probably destined for the breakers yard and indeed with the high price of scrap to the scrapyard.

Implements especially ploughs were an excellent trade in particular trailing ploughs which were making up to 1,000.

Stationary engines and horticultural items were well received with top price of the day 4,500 for a 1909 Hornsby Type Z 18hp hot bult engine smaller open crank engines were a consistent good trade with several in the range of 700 to 1,000.

As always the tractor spares were a buoyant trade especially the larger spares, wheels and tyres and some exceptional prices were achieved for spares of certain rarer models such as Turner and Ferguson Brown.

Inside the literature saw some good prices; Fowler Steam Roller Supplement 400, Austin tractor catalogue 160, Fordson Dexta workshop manual 100, quantity of Old Glory magazines (incl. Issue No.1) 260.

The excellent selection of steam models saw limited success with a 3" Fowler ploughing engine making 9,800 and a 1" Allchin traction engine at 1,750 amongst others.

A good selection of cast iron seats met a strong trade top price was 1,600 for a Brigham and Co Berwick. The steam spares were a good trade although there was a smaller entry than normal.

HOLLYCOMBE  MARCH NEWS UPDATE

The new season is rapidly approaching, with the first day of the 2004 season set for 4th April.  Much work has been completed over the winter, with several groups of volunteers taking on different aspects of maintenance and improvement.  Some examples are given below, but it is by no means an exhaustive list - just a few projects that came to mind when writing it.

All fairground rides have been dismantled and inspected and are currently being rebuilt ready for the season.

All boilers have been cleaned out and inspected.

The fairground rides have as usual received general woodwork repairs and much painting and varnishing has taken place.

The big wheel has undergone a major overhaul.

The restoration of the Ghost House is complete and this will see a welcome return for this season.

The gallopers have received a new "cheese wheel" - the large bevel cog in the centre drive.

A new concrete base has been laid for the Steam Swings.

New drainage in the fairground installed

Much track work has been carried out on the railways.

The miniature railway turntable has been replaced by a traverser for easier access to the shed.

Caledonia (Narrow gauge loco) has been dismantled and sent away for overhaul of the motion.  Due back shortly.

Standard gauge railway stock has been painted.

New larger water supply installed, which will cater for future requirements.

General site maintenance - fencing, painting, leaf clearance etc.

As ever, there are still many projects in the pipeline to keep us busy, so if you would like to join our band of volunteers, please feel free to contact us.
