LANCASHIRE TRACTION ENGINE CLUB NOTES

Engine Notes - Compiled by George Coles for the Club Journal

January 2004

Just before Christmas there was a rumour that a pair of ploughing engines No.15563 Wayfayer and No.15564 Wanderer had moved from Cambridgeshire to the Manchester/Lancashire/Cheshire region. I have subsequently heard from Fred Elmore that they have gone much further north, to Cumbria. Alec Sharphouse, Old Vicarage, Heald Broughton, Grange-over-sands is the new owner so doubtless they will appear at Flookborough Rally in due course. Fred also tells me that Fowler Roller No.8889 has left Kendal, Cumbria for Daventry.

There was a good turn out for the Boxing Day Run this year. As well as my own Clayton, Steve Dakins Wallis & Steevens Advance No.7931 was an early arrival. Lee Fisk brought his Fowler Roller No.16078, John Pennington his Burrell Tracton No.3385 and Richard Fairhurst his Fowler Roller No.16436. Ray Pearson low-loaded his Aveling Roller No.11788 to the lay-bye at the Olde No 3 and did the run the wrong way round, joining us at the Jolly Thresher just before 1 oclock, unfortunately the day ended in heavy rain. I was very pleased to see several new engines on the run, particularly the support of our younger members. This augers well for the future of the run.

Like me, you were no doubt delighted to hear of the MBE awarded to Fred Dibnah in the New Years Honours List. The restoration of his Aveling & Porter Tractor No.7838 is now almost complete. He has had it in steam and taken it for a short run to try it out. It has been a long job as it is now nearly 30 years since he bought it from the late Peter Froud, who had previously bought it by tender from Devon County Council in the 1960s. At that time the boiler barrel had inscribed on it, in large white letters, This engine came from Barnstable. It is buggered.

STEAM PARADE BANNED.

The following information has been posted on the Trevithic Day website.

A response form the Trevithick-day website editor. Independant of the event organisers.

I have been recently told that after apparently agreeing to proposed changes regarding the health and safety of the steam parade, Kerrier District Council and Camborne Police have decided to put a red light on the annual steam parade that normally follows the dances on Trevithick-Day.

The Trevithcik-Day association will be having one of its regular meetings on Monday 2nd February 2004.  It is expected that there will be a discussion on the ban, followed by an official press release and more facts on the ban to follow.

The rest of the Camborne Trevithcik-Day events, and the dances will continue as normal. The only concession on the steam parade ban is that the 'puffing-devil' replica will apparently still be allowed to run, leading the dance as usual.  I do not know if the ban includes the minature engines that usualy follow the children's dance.

I understand that the authorities have chosen to stop the steam parade, mainly because they are in fear of an accident involving one of the traction engines and a member of the public.  The event organisers had suggested having the annual steam parade separated from the dance, and held at the end of the day instead.  Also, because of pressure from the two authorities to erect static barriers, a human barrier using carried rope had been previously agreed on.

One of the two also allegedly accuses the event organisers of removing road closure barriers without authority in order for the parade to pass.  The only ones that get moved are at the end of Trelowarren street and by the library.  Both are policed, and have been moved every year by agreement.

It is expected that the traction engines will still be allowed on static display in the town throughout the day, as in previous years.  They will however, most likely not be allowed to move until the roads are re-opened, or shortly before they are.  It is then unclear what route they will be allowed to take out of Camborne.

Somerset Club to Celebrate its Jubilee in 2005

In the summer of 1955, a small event took place at Walford Cross a few miles outside Taunton in Somerset, which was to have far reaching effects on the preservation scene in the county. A group of steam engine enthusiasts staged the first Taunton Traction Engine Rally, which not only started a sequence of events leading to the present day Somerset Steam Spectacular at Low Ham near Langport, but also to the founding of the Somerset Traction Engine Club itself.

Over the years the rally, at Langport since 1978, has become the countys premier steam event, and the only one organised by a dedicated road steam club. At the Clubs AGM in October, John Reeves proposed that this fiftieth anniversary should be celebrated with a special rally on the third weekend in July, 2005, and his suggestions were unanimously accepted by the members present.  It is planned that there will be a road run on the Friday, probably starting from the original site at Walford Cross on the A38 between Taunton and Bridgwater. Participants will then travel along the A358 towards Glastonbury as far as Othery, where they will turn right, making their way through Aller to Langport and the site. This is a distance of 14 miles, mostly over the flat lands of the Somerset Levels, with a few sharpish hills to keep drivers on their toes, and with water readily available. We are hoping to bring together the engines that attended the first rally, perhaps even inviting fifty engines for fifty years.

At the moment John Reeves is investigating details of the entries at the first rally; he has a 1956 programme but not one for 1955. The rally itself will be of the usual format on the Saturday and Sunday. Obviously at this stage detailed planning is a long way ahead, (the Committee has a 2004 event to organise!!), but this announcement is being made so that anyone interested can make an advance note of the 2005 rally.

We'll keep you updated on the 2005 and 2004 events here at Road Steam.

TAUNTON NEW YEARS DAY ROAD RUN UPDATE & STEC NEWS

A quick update on Taunton Run, from John Reeves the principle organiser.

At present I have a total of 145 entries booked in, cars, tractors, commercials motorcycles and steam.

I have one steam entry form in, from Steve Gunn for his Wallis Advance roller.

Jerry Hawkins  brought his 'Pocahontas' S6 up to his home from brother Martin's premises in Devon yesterday and is expecting to bring it along. So two fairly certain steamers. Jerry is now STEC's Vice Chairman - Andy Melrose still Chairman. STEC's website due to reappear soon courtesy of Jerry; will let you know when it does for links etc.

Steve Gunn originally told me he was planning to bring Mike Hynd's Aveling TE Queen Victoria as well as the Wallis; no entry form returned yet, so who knows??

Martin Chedgey rang asking for an entry form for Lady Betty, but so far he has not sent it in. He's quite likely to turn up though! He's been a few times before - unannounced!

The most rare and unusual outside the steam may be Mike Lawrence's ex-Wynn's Pacific. When I saw him at our Club Xmas do last week he thought he might bring it. If he does, it will be the first time on the road, and some sight!

AULTMAN TAYLOR TRACTION ENGINE FOR SALE ON EBAY

This Aultman Taylor steam tractor was originally purchased by Happy Hollow Logging Company in Mason County Washington early 1900's. This was the first mechanized tractor in Mason County. As it turned out, this wasn't a big enough tractor to skid the virgin timber of the time so Happy Hollow purchased a bigger 20 hp Aultman Taylor to log with. This tractor has EXCELLENT GEARING, some gears are new. The 3 small pinion gears show wear. The large differential gears are currently off of the tractor (removed so tractor could be towed). Today, the tractor needs the bottom of the smoke box replaced, a new flue sheet & some tubes, possibly other boiler work. Engine has been run with steam from a steam donkey & runs excellent. Tractor is 14 feet long & 7 feet wide. Rear wheels are 5 feet tall, front wheels are 44 inches tall. Serial number is 7855. Outside of cylinder is 15.5 inches long & 10.75 inches in diameter; we believe this to be an 8 Horse Power - 1 of 3 known to still exist. The curved spoke, left hand mounted flywheel makes this an unusual model. I have detailed pictures of a restored tractor for restoration purposes.
I can load & deliver to Seattle Freight docks for overseas shipment if necessary or arrange Northwest delivery (WA, OR, ID, MT) for a fee. More pictures on request...email all questions prior to bidding. Tractor is located in Shelton, WA. and available for viewing.

Payment is accepted in cash, cashiers check or money order with in 10 days of auction close.

We can deliver for $4/loaded mile to WA, OR or ID. We are happy to help you load at no extra charge but buyer is responsible for arranging transport & any other costs there incurred.

2003 NTET AGM

The AGM for 2003 was held at the Black Country Museum, Dudley on Saturday 15th November.  It was attended by in excess of 120 members who gave the venue and the event a tremendous 'thumbs up'.

Robert Herring, who organised the AGM on behalf of the NTET, said the he was very pleased with the tremendous support given by the staff at the Black Country Museum and also thanked the owners of the road going steam exhibits which included Len Crane and the 'Wolverhampton Wanderer'.

Andrew Semple chaired the AGM which was presided over by the President Giles 'Doc' Romanes.  'Doc' was unanimously re-elected as President which was considered to be a most significant and appropriate appointment as the Trust enters its 50th Anniversary year.

As has now become the norm', the annual awards were made immediately after the formal event had been closed.  Later in the afternoon Steve Dean presented around 200 of his several thousand items in his photographic collection in the cafeteria.

On Sunday 16th November members travelled to nearby Bridgnorth to the premises of Russell Cook there to be entertained by the sight and sound of his extensive and magnificent collection of steam engines, wagon, organs and fair ground equipment
