CALL FOR A SECOND

Below is an explanation of the music and lyrics for some of the tracks on the album. Some tracks have been ommitted where either the meaning is confused in my mind, or the subject is too personal or current. Explanations of these may be provided by direct email.

Canning Circus

Canning Circus is a the name of a junction/round-about on the A52 between Nottingham university campus and Nottingham city centre. Walking one Saturday morning, as I do each week, crossing the roads around the juction, I thought of the first line of the song as the traffic lights changed and the cars moved on. When I got home to my guitar, I worked out the verse I had thought of and some more words. The chorus came later on when I had access to a piano.

The guitar solo is backwards, bending the rules of the 'live' sounding production. The bass and left-hand piano parts clash slightly in the verses, but that's OK. Perhaps trumpets would have enhanced the song, but again that would have been against the aims of the album

Put up a fight

This song began with the piano riff. I then wrote the rest of the chords and the melody, but didn't have a clue about the words. I thought it sounded quite scary, but it was brother that thought it sounded like someone building up to a fight - so I combined the two. It was nothing to do with me so I made the subject an anonymous female, depicted by my sister, Miriam, singing the echo.

Field of Love

I actually wrote the chorus to this while in my first band at junior school. I revived it (and transposed it) for my broken voice. The 6th harmonies are interesting and it features some of my best harmonica playing.

Special Day

I've made it a policy to include on each album a song based on an original hebrew tune. I used a couple of bits from Hallel in this. Special Day is all about Hallel - which is said on a special day. It is actually quite deep covering many of my thoughts about prayer and religion.

Home Life, Uni Life

An light way to end the album, ending the year at uni. Musically unoriginal, but fun
