Firemaking Guide

For lighting a fire, you will need a log. To obtain these, you have to use your woodcutting skill which is detailed in the woodcutting guide, which can be found here.

To light a log you need a tinderbox

Use the tinderbox on the log in your inventory, no need to drop the log first. Your character will then try to light the log if his or hers firemaking level is high enough. The higher your level is, the fewer tries you need to light the log.

Different Logs In Firemaking

Type of Log Firemaking Level Needed Exp Gained When Burned
Regular 1 40
Oak 15 60
Willow 30 90
Maple 45 135
Yew 60 202.5
Magic 75 303

The burn time of your fire is affected by the type of log you use. Higher valued logs burn for longer periods of time. An additional 15 seconds is added to the burn time for each higher grade of logs (example: Willow logs will burn 30 seconds longer than Regular logs). Below is a table with the recommended levels when you should stop and start burning specific logs.

Log Type Recommended Start Burning Level Recommended Stop Burning Level
Regular logs Level 1 Level 25
Oak Logs Level 25 Level 40
Willow Logs Level 40 Level 50
Maple Logs Level 50 Level 68
Yew Logs Level 68 Level 85
Magic Logs Level 85 Continue

Note:
For an F2P players, it is suggested that you just continue burning Willow logs from lvl 40 onwards as yew logs have a high selling price.
For a P2P players, it is suggested that you continue burning maple logs from lvl 50 onwards as yew and magic logs have a high selling price.

Also, to make a little cash, firemaking comes in useful. It is not the best way to make money as prices are low, but some people will pay in demand of a fire. The main place fire is in demand is the Karamja docks, as people need fires to cook fish and sell at the general store. I charge 20gp each fire. As I said, it is not the best way to make money, but good for a little loose change.
