Overview of Project:

First discuss with the students the food pyramid and serving amounts prior to the start of this project. Try felt boards to categorize foods and a large poster of the food pyramid to help demonstrate.

After having discussed the food pyramid and the food groups, students will be asked to use the teacher made log sheet to log the food they eat on any one particular day. (See student examples for copy of log sheet) This was given as a homework assignment and must be completed before work on the computer.

During center activities, students come to the computer with log and servings sheets. Begin by having students complete the food pyramid template to categorize the foods listed on their log sheets. Stamps of foods are available in the program, but any item not included as a stamp may be drawn or typed in.

Once the pyramid is complete, students use the graph template to graph the number of servings on each group. Use the drawing tools to create the bars of the graph.

Students may then create a cover for the booklet using the cover template.

Print out all three pages and attach to log and serving sheets to create a nutrition diary for each student.

Discuss the findings of the graphs. Students should be aware of the areas where too much or too little was eaten in one day.
