| Grade: First/Second NCSS Standards: Individuals, Groups and Institutions Materials: Computers Internet access Pre-cut circles (one plain/one with writing lines-one each per student) Chart with presidents names and pictures Web sites used: www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/index.html www.usmint.gov/kids Overview of Project: Place president chart in front of the class and have students come up one at a time to chose the president they wish to report on. Each student must choose a different president. You may wish to place the students name above the president he/she has chosen. Give a short internet presentation and help students locate the appropriate web sites for research. Tell the students what information you wish them to locate. (date of presidency, date of life span, where he is from and one interesting fact) Students then write a short reprt on the lined circle that will be presented to the class. Integrate this lesson with the math curriculum by visiting the U.S. Mint web site and discussing the new fifty-state coins. Students then decorate the plain circle with pictures of the president they have chosen. Decorate the coin with any aspect of the president's life. Glue the two circles together to create a head and tail side of the coin. Students may also create a coin that represents their school, much like that of the new fifty-state coins. |
