The doors opened to reveal corridor, brightly lit with fluorescent lights. She quickly stepped off the elevator and removed her Wolfram and Hart ID card from her jacket, as she headed for the door at the end of the corridor. When she reached the door, she swiped her ID card through a keypad and entered a six digit access code. Seconds later the red light on the keypad changed to green triggering the locks on the door to be released. Returning her ID to her jacket Lilah turned the doorknob and quietly entered a spacious laboratory. The lab was filled with computers and other high tech equipment as well as ancient runes, obelisks, crystals and several medieval tapestries. In the center of the room stood a large, empty glass cylinder with numerous flashing lights, probes, tubes and hoses connected to it. Next to the cylinder was a hospital bed that was currently surrounded by a doctor, three lab techs and two hooded individuals. Upon the bed was a woman who was hooked up to multiple IVs and monitors. Lilah crossed her arms and watched intently, as the woman opened her eyes and with a frightened look on her face, reached out for the doctor, who was standing next to the bed. The woman swallowed several times then spoke to him in a weak and raspy voice. Where am I? The doctor picked up a towel and wiped the sweat from the woman1s forehead. Shhh Its okay. You1re safe. No one is going to hurt you. The doctor nodded to one of the lab techs. Im going to give you something to help you sleep. You need to rest. The lab tech inserted a syringe into one of the womans IVs and injected a sedative. The doctor placed his hand on the womans arm and gave it a gentle squeeze. Now close your eyes and get some sleep. The doctor stepped away from the bed, as the woman closed her eyes and drifted back to sleep. Keep her sedated until the tests are completed. I dont want her injuring herself. The doctor turned around and as he reached to pick up a clipboard he noticed Lilah staring at him. What the hell is she doing here? he muttered under his breath. He quickly scribbled a note, then handed the clipboard to one of the lab techs. Prep her for an MRI and a CAT scan. Then find out where the hell the results of her blood work are at. Right away, Doctor. the lab tech answered as she hastily departed. The doctor walked up to Lilah. What are you doing here? he annoyingly asked. I was under the impression you wanted the status report tomorrow. Lets get something straight. Im in charge of this project and Ill come down here anytime time I damn well please. Is that understood? Lilah icily replied sticking her index finger in the doctors face. The doctor shook his head. Yes, Miss Morgan. Lilah glared at the doctor. Glad we understand each other. Now whats the status of the project? The doctor walked over to a computer workstation and inserted a CD into the computer. Lilah came up behind the doctor and looked over his shoulder, as he typed in a few commands. Seconds later a video of the woman, who was currently laying in the hospital bed, being removed from the large glass cylinder appeared on the screen. She was removed from the gestation chamber approximately two hours ago. the doctor stated as the video continued to play. Any complications? None whatsoever. In fact she made the transition much better than expected. The doctor entered a few more commands and another monitor came on showing a graphic of a DNA strand. Her DNA structure is stable and there was only a point zero zero one percent replicate drift factor. So I take it the druids that were put at your disposal were successful in stabilizing her genetic structure. Yes the use of their ancient magic during the gestation stage is the only reason the genetic abnormalities that showed up early on were able to be corrected. How is she health wise? The doctor typed another sequence of commands into the computer and the graphic of the DNA strand was replaced by a graphic of the woman1s body. Her vitals are stable and so far there are no physical abnormalities. Expect for a slight electrolyte imbalance, which is being corrected as we speak, she appears to be in perfect health. Well be able to confirm that after we finish running the tests. ~~=*=~~ Unbeknownst to the doctor and Lilah, a lab tech sitting at a computer station across the room was anxiously keeping an eye on them. She looked at the screen just as the words Transfer Complete appeared. The lab tech slowly stood and removed a CD from the computer. She covertly slipped the CD into her lab coat and turned off the computer. She pushed up her glasses and cautiously checked to see if anyone had seen her. Satisfied that she had not been noticed, the lab tech picked up her clipboard and quietly returned to her duties. ~~=*=~~ How did her physical appearance turn out? The doctor handed Lilah a stack of photos. See for yourself. Her eyes widened as she glanced at the photos. Im impressed. She looks just like her. Lilah looked at the doctor. How long until shes ready? Five months. Im going to hold you to that, Doctor. Lilah replied as she set the photos on the desk. And youd better deliver. Cause Id really hate to see something happen to that lovely daughter of yours. The doctor angrily stared at Lilah. If you or your goons come near my daughter Ill... Youll what? Kill me? I highly doubt that, Doctor. Lilah retorted as she straightened the doctors lab coat. Well, Id love to stay and chat, but I1ve got a board meeting to get to. She flashed him an evil smile and headed for the door. Just before exiting the lab Lilah turned and looked once more at the doctor. You1d better get back to work, Doctor. Youve got a deadline to meet. Lilah then walked out closing the door behind her. ~~=*=~~ Los Angeles - Present Day Cordelia cried out and clutched her head as she felt the thunderous rumblings of a vision come through her. Before she could say anything, Angel, by instinct, flew across the lobby and grabbed her before she could hit the floor. Wesley, Gunn and Fred rushed to Cordelia1s side, wanting to help, but knowing that there was nothing they could do. They could only anxiously watch as their friend suffered through yet another mind ripping vision. Angel held Cordelia firmly to him as the full force of the vision hit. She began moaning and thrashing uncontrollably, as a jumbled collage of images quickly flashed before her eyes. She saw the paled yellow parchment of ancient scrolls and the blood red cover of a worn leather bound book. Cordelia gripped Angels arm tightly as more images, and the pain |
