Here Comes Summer

by Allen R. Crise RRD

Well, we waited through the winter cold, short days and long nights, now the spring rains have come and gone. The rivers are clearing. The lakes and ponds are returning to normal levels. Now it is time to fish. The flies we tied to pass the time are ready to be fished. The backing on the reels have been changed. The fly lines have been cleaned. The reels cleaned and greased. The daylight savings time gives us the evening hours to "match the hatch."

Where do we go? Many of us have a favorite place or a special little area we can go to hone our casting skills or just get away. I have found that a little evening fishing or Saturday morning can make the week go much better. Maybe some of you do not have a favorite spot or would like a new one that offers a new challenge. I know that some of you have a honey hole" that you would not share with your grandmother, but some of you would take the time to draw a map to yours or take a fellow fly fisherman (blindfolded) to yours.

I would like to make a list of the local areas that the Fort Worth Fly Fishers fish. I think that it might help our new members and create meeting places for the rest of us. I know that it is somewhat difficult to give up your fishing hole, but the rewards of sharing and finding new friends should be motive enough. So to start this off here are some I know of, that do not need a boat, just wade right in:

The Brazos River: below the Granbury Dam. This is a Brazos River Authority area. You will find stripers and largemouth bass. Dangerous when releasing water.

The Brazos River: @ 67 bridge just northeast of Glen Rose.
Fish upriver for both spotted and largemouth bass. Downstream side can be fished when the water is high. Deep pools hold stripers.

The Brazos River: @ Spunky's Crossing.
Off Somerville County Rd 200. Or across from Mitchell Bend Estates. Gravel bars and pools. Assorted bass and perch.

Paluxy River: @ Glen Rose.
Cross river on Hwy 67 southwest of town. Turn right on County Rd 1002 and follow to low water crossing Wade up river to pool With tracks. Nice river to work on our mending with light tackle. Spotted bass and perch.

Paluxy River: @ County Rd 1008.
Pass Dinosaur State Park. Lanham Mill Park. Camping at county park. River can hold a few spotted bass. Deep water above crossing shallow below.

OK, now it's your turn.
