8-08-2000: River/5Eyes emissaries

Assuming you agree with Tison to (1) train a little, until near the end of the season (~6-7wks), passing some holy days such as Zola Fel in the process; (2) travel downriver to talk with The One; and (3) assault the depths of Dyskund on the way home (it is north of 5 eyes and Muriah's bog), here are some details:

Che'en meets with those going downriver to talk with the dragon (ALL OF YOU ARE WELCOME; river voices are expected to go) and explains what the Zola Fel cult's goals are in this negotiation. He and Sa'ar trust you to represent the river well. Avoid conflict at all costs, of course.

Goals, in order of priority:

1) Arrange for an allegiance with the creatures of 5 eyes (not just the dragon, but the dnewts, newtlings, and other beings that live there). Detail common foes and how you can help each other. Mutual support and such.

--Che'en says that officially, confidentially, the Lunars are considered potential foes and it is OK to privately arrange for contingency defense plans including Lunar attacks. More non-controversial foes of the River mainly include Chaos, such as Muriah who lives nearby. The river has slight negative feelings towards nomads, and is neutral to slightly friendly with the Sun Domers.

2) Get protection for the Mru from the dragon. The One does eat them on occassion. Maybe you can convince The One not to do so.

3) Other ideas from you? Che'en does not expect to you make a final pact in this meeting (although it would be great!), so try to get the best deal for the river (bring Tarranyr!) and return to Che'en with that offer. You will likely return a second time for more negotiations.

What you can give:

1) The river cult is not rich but can offer a meager amount of flashy treasures for the dragon to sleep on. They would prefer to keep an annual tribute at 500L but could go as high as 1500L if there are concessions.

2) Transport. If the river folk offer anything, it's mobility on the river. Maybe the dnewts need more mobility. Any reasonable arrangement might be acceptable to the cult; it's cheap.

3) Advisors or emissaries. The river could have permanent or semi-permanent envoys stationed at 5 Eyes Rise or its vicinity. There are Zola Fel-worshipping newtlings there, of course, but they owe more fealty to the dragon. Human envoys might be useful.

4) Defense against chaos and other foes. Aside from the services of the River Voices themselves, the Zola Fel cult can offer aquatic creatures that can prove helpful, and the Mru (though generally passive) can muster a few capable warriors.

5) Trade. Maybe the 5 eyes need something more from traders. They don't seem able to make many weapons or armor and the River cult is adept at bringing such things to remote places like 5 eyes. See what they want.

What might the Dragon want?

Che'en and the others are not too sure. The 5 eyes settlement is self-sufficient, apparently. They don't produce much to trade and don't import much except metal goods and such.

Historically, the cliffs of 5 Eyes Rise have been isolated from other regions and it has only been in the last few years that Duke Raus and other Lunar settlers moved in to the so-called Grantlands around 5 eyes. Thus they have only started interacting with the outside world lately, in the past 8 years. Much of that interaction has been hostile; they don't seem to like any neighbors.

Dragons normally like warm live prey and shiny treasures, and from people's experiences The One does not seem much different.

The creatures of 5 eyes have had bad confrontations with Muriah's spawn, Duke Raus, the nomads, and the Sun Domers in recent history. Perhaps one or more of these really bother them and the river can help.

Finally, Che'en asks for your input.
