10-04-1999: The Old Sun Dome Retreat

You return to Pavis and quickly find Haloric Glowbrow to report. He almost seems amused by Arcus's unfortunate condition, and speaks at length to the "boy" (who seems more relaxed and coherent now) in Firespeech, getting more and more interested. After an hour spent ignoring you to talk to the ghost, he says this:

"It is well that you brought Jodu here. He was only sixteen when he died, and does not know a great deal of helpful details about the secrets of the temple, but he has enthralled me with the story of the temple's last days. Much of this you do not need to know, it is for our people alone. In 1095, Jodu was caught selling stolen temple documents to a spy from the Empire of the Wyrm's Friends. His father, the High Priest Rokosa the Shamed, pleaded to Zebrokith for his son's life. Zebrokith graced Rokosa with the duty of blinding his son in both eyes with a hot poker, and sentenced the boy to life imprisonment. Rokosa became depressed and withdrawn as the years went on, and then the earthquake rocked the temple. Zebrokith refused Rokosa's request to free the boy when the temple was abandoned; he was to be left there to starve to death. Against Zebrokith's will, Rokosa sent the boy food laced with a quick, painless poison the day that the temple was bricked up and purified with fire. Jodu drifted off to eternal sleep, and you just awakened him after 520 years in limbo."

"Temple history postdating the earthquake states that Rokosa was soon judged unfit for the priesthood and ordered into retirement. As he requested, his tower is in the hills outside the Old Sun Dome, looking down on his son's tomb. It is worth having you look at it after you explore the Old Temple further. I will tell Arcus where to find it."

"On other issues, I commend you for your good judgement in your mission. We need to know more about the evil spirits haunting the temple. Destroy them if you can. The blemish of Chaos on the temple does not surprise me much; evil has a way of oozing into any place it can hide. It seems that the temple is an odd place, where forces of light, darkness, and the void of chaos coexist in a forsaken paradox. Expect more surprises in the last few chambers. I would be very wary of the Temple, I sense that great evil is at work there."

"You returned just in time. I have received word that Pol Joni bandits attacked the Old Guard militia days ago and Lady Vega's unit was sent to hunt them down. Preliminary reports state that the militia suffered minor casualties that will be replaced shortly. Vaaron has requested reinforcements but I doubt that they will be granted; this will seem like an isolated, rare incident. I have heard no mention of your presence. The guards will be vigilant for the next week or so, until Vega's templars give up the chase. The nomads will lose them in the Vulture Country for sure, and may come back because they were almost unharmed."

"Rest up and prepare to return to the Temple. I know of this war leader of the Pol Joni band, he is a wild Storm Bull named Stikklebrix who sometimes hunts in the Rubble. I can go to the Old Temple under the auspices of counseling Vaaron about the nomad raid. This will allow me to distract the militia while you work... I hear there are flocks of wild geese in the Vulture Country, ripe for the hunting. Return to the temple in one week; I will escort you as far as the New Temple. Expect only a lazy token guard at the Old Temple; the others will be preoccupied. I recommend opening the library first, carefully collecting any important documents, and then opening the Temple and Meeting Halls at night. Do be wary not to alert the guard because reinforcements may come more swiftly this time. The men are frightened of the hauntings but may find the courage to investigate possible trespassers, especially in light of day."

"My cousin Arcus will be freed from his captor before you leave, so he may return with you. I want to use this opportunity to speak to the boy in private and gather more information. Then I will arrange for the exorcism and find a way for Jodu to have peace; I have a feeling that Chalana Arroy can help. Worry not on this matter, I will do it."

"What else can I help you with?"
