"For the hopelessly performance addicted"

"It's never been better than this. You can't call any automobile the best anything without accounting for personal taste. With that reminder,we'll get to the point:Some folks at AutoWeek will tell you that the 1998 Camaro Z28 with the SS package is the best muscle car ever made." - AutoWeek, June 1, 1998

In 1996 Chevy and SLP Engineering teamed up to bring back a performance icon,  the Camaro SS.  The new SS was available as an option for the Z28.  The SS was set upart from the Z28 with a unique stinger-style functional hoodscoop,17x9.5 ZR-1 wheels with 275/40ZR17 BF Goodrich Comp T/A tires and SS badges.  SLP also added a freer flowing exhaust set up.  Optional equipment for the SS included a  Hurst shifter,  Comp T/A drag radials, a Torsen differential, SS floor mats, upgraded Bilstein shocks, progressive rate springs, and a synthetic oil treatment. In SS trim the Camaro horse power rating was boosted from 285 to 305,

The SS was  a limited production option with only around 2400 built in the first year of production, but that would soon change with increased media exposure and a performance market begging for something special.

1997 would mark the 30th anniversary of the Camaro, Chevrolet would celebrate the event with a special anniversary package.  Available on the Z28 and SS the anniversary package included white paint with Hugger orange stripes, white rims, Houndstooth interior, and 30th anniversary logo embroidered into the seats.  With 4,534 Anniversary models built, it proved to be a popular option. There were approximately 1,000 Anniv. SS's built in 1997.  1997 also saw more SS's being built , with a production run of 3,418.The SS was gaining in popularity. There was alos a limited run of special SS's being built that year.  SLP was transplanting LT4's into 100 Anniv. SS's.  The LT4 was rated at 330 hp and was easily capable of running low 13 sec. 1/4 miles
.

1998 marked the first substantial changes to the Camaro since '93.  The Camaro received a new front fascia, with flush headlights, a contoured hood, and a  revised ABS braking system. But the big news was the new engine. The Camaro received the Corveete's mighty LS1 engine . The LS1 was a completely redesigned all aluminum engine, a first for production Camaros. The engine was capable of 305 hp in the Z28 and 320 in the SS.'98 was also the year when the SS was taken under Chevy's wing .The SS was now produced at the Camaro plant, with only the hood and spoiler applied by SLP.The SS was designated by RPO WU8.The real benefit of Chevy's new role was that the SS was now featured in the Camaro brochures and was getting more advertisement. In 1998 3017 SS's were built.

1999 was an even better year for production of the SS. With around 4,600 SS's being built, the benefit of having Chevrolet marketing them was starting to pay off. In 1999 Chevy  brought back an old Camaro option,Hugger Orange. The color was available in '99 only, and looked absolutely beautiful on the new Camaro. Also for '99 ,the torsional rear end was standard on all V8 powered Camaros
