ADAPTED AND DIRECTED BY MINNEAPOLIS RESIDENT
RYAN PAUL NORTH
"RITA HAYWORTH AND THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION - THE STAGED ADAPTATION" was adapted by Ryan Paul North and produced by RPN Productions. "Shawshank" will make its world premier May 25 and run May 26, 27, 28, 30, and June 1, 2, and 3, 2000 at the Howard Conn Fine Arts Center.
Ryan Paul North founded RPN Productions in 1997 and has since produced "Shawshank" and Reservoir Dogs - The Staged Adaptation. The staged version of "Shawshank" was derived from the short story by Steven King and the screenplay and widely acclaimed 1994 movie written and directed by Frank Darabont. RPN Productions obtained the stage performance rights from Castlerock Pictures with special permission from Mr. Darbont himself.
The Story celebrates the resilience of the human spirit. Andy Dufrense, wrongfully imprisoned for the double homicide of his wife and her lover, has to survive under the harsh truths of prison life. Andy befriends "Red", another lifer at Shawshank Prison and builds a friendship that defies the gray walls and realities of an abuse filled prison. In a place where hope is non existant, Andy finds ways to make it from day to day relying on an inner spark that the other inmates find hard to understand and the system can't extinguish. With an ending that will leave you breathless, Shawshank's story delivers a message of hope.
This diversified cast of seventeen men includes eager first timers to
seasoned Twin Cities performers. Michael Lee (Andy Dufrense) has
worked on various local stages including The Guthrie, The Jungle, Theatre
de la Jeune Lune, and Park Square. Christopher Whiting (Ellis "Red"
Redding) has performed at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, The Paul Bunyan
Playhouse, Hey City Theatre, and Dudley Riggs… Chris can also be seen on
TV sitting on field of the Minnesota Twin's Stadium. David Hancox
(Warden Norton) has performed in several roles at Theatre in the Round
and can be seen in numerous commercials and films.
Damon Hollingsworth (Snooze) is an actor with The Interact Theatre
- a theatre for individuals with disability labels. This ensemble
cast offers a rich texture of personalities through which the powerful
story of Shawshank is told.
RPN Productions has teamed up with THE MINNESOTA AIDS PROJECT (MAP) to host a special benefit night performance of Shawshank on June 1, 2000 at 7:30 PM. All ticket proceeds will be donated to MAP, the leader in the fight against HIV and AIDS in Minnesota.
