JORDAN
Edward Jordan was a Captain in the Revolution from Lunenburg County,
Virginia; he was a Justice of the County Court of Lunenburg County from
1780 to 1797; and was a vestryman of Cumberland Parish from 1780-1785.
His father was doubtless named Edward Jordan, and was likely the Edward
Jordan who in 1748 secured a grant for 654 acres of land on Conches Creek.
The Lunenburg County records show that Edward Jordan, Jr., was deputy
sheriff under Daniel Claiborn, sheriff from 1767 to 1769. This is thought to be
the Edward Jordan, the Vestryman and Captain in the Revolution.
There is a record in Bristol Parish Register of the birth March 27, 1742-3,
of Edward Jordans, son of Samuel and Milson Jordans.
Edward Jordan of Lunenburg County, made his will July 21, 1820, it was
probated August 16, 182_.
In it he mentions his wife, Susannah Jordan, and the following children and
grandchildren:
1. Baxter Jordan,
2. Miles Jordan,
3. Labon Jordan,
4. John Jordan,
5. James Jordan,
6. Susannah Pettus,
7. Mary Jeffress,
8. Polly Jordan,
9. Francis Jordan (a deceased son), who had:
(1) Nancy Jordan,
(2) Martha Francis Jordan
(3) William Jordan.
Baxter Jordan married Polly Lipscomb Pettus, daughter of John Pettus.
Miles Jordan married Harriott Pettus, of Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The
marriage bond is dated Nov. 12, 1804. In connection with it there is on file a
note from W. Pettus, brother of Harroitt.
John Jorda, probably John Jordan above, married Elizabeth Jordan, daughter
of Benjamin Jordan of Charlotte County, Virginia. The marriage bond, in
Charlotte County, is dated Aug. 3, 1799.
James Jordan, possibly James Jordan(5 above)), was a member of the County
Court in Lunenburg County, Virginia, in 1781.
Susanna Jordan married, Feb. 11, 1796, Robert Winn.
Polly Jordan married Thomas Cheatham. The marriage bond in Lunenburg County,
Virginia, is dated Jan. 31, 1825.
Susannah Jordan, the wife of Edward Jordan, made her will May 4, 1823, and
it was probated in Lunenburg County, Virginia, June 13, 1825. In it she
mentions her sons Laban Jordan and Miles Jordan and her daughters Mary Jeffress
and Susannah Pettus.
The will of Thomas Jordan of Lunenburg County, Virginia, bears date March
13, 1815, and it was probated May 11, 1815. He mentions his wife Elizabeth
Jordan and the following children:
1. Freeman Jordan, Jr.,
2. Thos. Jordan, Jr.,
3. James Jordan,
4. Edward Jordan, Jr.,
5. Polly E. Jordan,
6. Elizabeth B. Tucker,
7. Elizabeth T. Jordan,
8. Mary Anne Jordan.
He mentions Thos. W.J. Jordan and Thomas E. Jordan, sons of Freeman Jordan.
But it is not clear whether or not they are sons of his Freeman Jordan, Jr.
He named as his executors Thomas Jordan, Jr., and John Wilson.
In Lunenburg County Virginia, there is the record of a marriage of Thomas
Jordan to Rosary Wilson, Aug. 2, 1831, and of that of Elizabeth B. Jordan,
daughter of Thomas Jordan, to Charles S. Tucker, son of Joseph Tucker (M.B.
dated Feb. 23, 1811).
There is in Lunenburg County, Virginia, the will of Elizabeth Jordan, dated
October 4, 1794, and probated January 8, 1795, in which the testatriz mentions
the following children and grandchildren:
1. Benjamin Jordan, son,
2. Samuel Jordan, son,
3. William Jordan, son,
4. Edward Jordan, grandson,
5. Presley Hightower, grandson,
6. Frances Hightower, granddaughter.
The will of Elizabeth Jordan, wife of Thomas Jordan, was dated July 14,
1822, and probated October 14, 1822, in it the testatrix mentions her daughter
Elizabeth Tucker and her son Edward Jordan.
The will of Baxter Jordan, son of Edward Jordan, bears date April 11, 1823,
and was probated August 11, 1823. It mentions no children, but mentions his
wife Mary L. Jordan, and names her and Dr. Edward H. Birchett executors.
There is in Lunenburg County a marriage bond dated Dec. 29, 1803, for the
marriage of Baxter Jordan to Polly Lipscomb Pettus. "Polly" was doubtless a
nickname.

OBITUARY:
Col. W.B. Jordan died at his home six miles northwest of Mountain Home, in
Baxter Co., Arkansas. December 16, 1897. He was born in Lunenburg Co. Va.,
December 28, 1808, moved to Green Co. Ala., remained there until 1867, when he
moved to Baxter Co. Arkansas and spent the rest of his life.
Funeral services were held by the writer Dec. 17, 1897, at his residence.
His body was deposited in the Mtn. Home Cemetery 18th in the presence of
weeping relatives and friends.
Bro. Jordan was a member of the Christian Church in Va. and lover of the
blessed Christ, confessing Him publicly to the writer when in a protracted
meeting at the Jordan school house years ago.
He was a kind neighbor and useful citizen, leader in every movemet
calculated to improve his community.
As a husband and father he was provident and true to his family. It has been
the writer's privilege to be intimately acquainted with him for the last thirty
years, and I can say he was truly a good man. He was looking forward anxiously
to his next birthday, expecting a reunion of his children and grandchildren
wanting them to see him start on his ninetieth year, as he remarked to the
writer a few days before his death. But the lord took him that he might have a
glorious reunion with the seven children that has gone on before.
Farther Jordan will be greatly missed in the home and in the community. He
leaves a beloved aged wife, four children many relatives and friends to mourn
his departure. Yet they weep not as those having no hope, but cherish the fond
hope of meeting him where parting will be no more.
May God bless the breaved.

JORDAN
After losing a small fortune in Alabama during the Civil War, William B.
Jordan came to Arkansas to get a new start. He staked out 1,000 acres of land
on Northfork and White Rivers in what was then Marion County, But was
incorporated in Baxter County when it was formed. A part of this land on the
White River is still owned by the children of his granddaughter, Hessie Jordan
Dilbeck.
The Family of William B. Jordan came originally from England, and both of
his grandfathers, Edward Jordan and John Pettus, were outstanding soldiers in

In 1867, Col. Jordan brought his family to Arkansas and established their
home at what became known as the Jim Lonon place on Highway 126. The original
house is now a part of Mountain Village 1890 in Bull Shoals.
Baxter Jordan married Mary Conley. Their children included Fannie (M. George

Col. William B. Jordan. This gentleman is one of the leading farmers of
Independence Township, Baxter County, Ark., and has followed this calling from
his earliest boyhood, having been initiated into its mysteries by his father.
He was born in Lunenburg County, Va., in 1808, to Baxter Jordan, who was born
in the same county in 1777 and died in 1823, having followed the calling of a
merchant and farmer. His marriage resulted in the birth of two children,
William B., and Thomas, who died in Alabama. The subject of this sketch was
educated in his native county and an adjoining county, and upon attaining his
twentieth year he began farming. In 1835 he left the State of his birth and
went to Greene County, Ala. where he gave his attention to planting and
milling, carrying on the latter occupation very extensively. He remained there
until the war closed, during which time he lost property to the value of about
$40,000. He afterward came to Arkansas and located in Marion county, but now
in Baxter County, which was then covered with primeval forest, and this county
he has helped to clear and develop. His estate comprises 1,000 acres of as
fine land as there is in the county, and he has 400 acres under cultivation.
Unlike many who started out in life with some capital, he did not squander it,
but put it to the best use he could, and being a careful business man he has
become wealthy, and now deserves to rest from the burden and heat of the day.
Since his residence in this county he has served as justice of the peace, and
office he also held in Alabama for many years. While in that State he
commanded a regiment of militia, having held all the lower offices of rank.
In 1829 he was married to Miss Phaup, who died after having borne him two
children: Mrs. Sarah Rose, who lives in Greene County, Ala., and one that died
there leaving four children. In 1839 he wedded Miss Martha Gammil of Green
County, Ala., who bore him three sons and two daughters, one of whom is the
wife of Hon. C. A. Eatman. Col. Jordan is a member of the A.F. & A. M. and
politically is a Democrat. HIs grandfather served in the Colonial Army during
the Revolution, was an officer and bore the name of Edward Jordan. The
maternal grandfather, John Pettus was also a soldier in that war, and was in
the battle of Guilford Court House, N.C. The Jordans originally came form
England, and down to the present day have been honorable, useful and lawabiding
citizens.

Notes for MARTHA GAMMILL:
BURIAL: Location is Cooper(Mountain Home) cemetery, Mountain Home, Baxter
County, Arkansas
OBITUARY:
Mrs. Martha Jordan(nee Gammill) was born in Alabama, Feb. 17, 1821. She was
married to W.B. Jordan in 1838. This happy union lasted until December, 1897,
when her husband preceded her to the other world. She professed religion in
middle life and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, living a consistent
life until God called her from labor to rest, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. She had been
quite feeble for some time but none thought of the end being so near. She was
suddenly attacked with a feeling of weakness and soon fell asleep in Jesus. She
lived long to bless her friends, and to serve her Lord. Her life of service and
labors of love shall never be forgotten.
"Servent of God well done,
Rest from thy loved employ.
Thy conflict past thy victories won,
Enter the Master's joy."
The writer conducted her funeral services at the residence of her daughter,
Mrs. C.A. Eatman. Several of her children and grandchildren were there to pay
the last tribute of respect to one they loved most dearly.
Amid the falling tears we laid her remains to rest in the Mountain Home
cemetery.
May God, who drieth the mourner's tears and who healeth the broken hearts,
comfort the friends of the deceased and guide them all to the Heaven of Eternal
Rest.
"O, where is now our mother dear?
Gone home to mansions bright and fair,
No more she'll shed the bitter tear
She's happy in her mansions there."
Look up, dear friend, to that blest land
Where mother waits with beckoning hand,
Pursue your way, and ne'er give o'er
Till you shall reach that blessed shore,
There to clasp glad hands forever,
To part no more, never, no never.

Another August Wedding.
On Saturday evening at 6 o'clock a pretty little wedding took place at the
bride's home, six miles northeast of Holdenville, wherein Miss Addie Lee and
Mr. E. Jordan were made man and wife, Rev. Bengel of Yeager officiating. Miss
Addie is the refined and accomplished daughter of the well known Mr. Lee who
lives on the Porter McFarland Ranch. Mr. Jordan is recently from Arkansas, but
since becoming acquainted with the Creek Nation has decided that this is the
place for him and the happy young people will commence housekeeping at once. A
sumptuous supper was served to a crowd of well-wishing quests.
