2003  D-LEAGUE  SCOUTING REPORTS

SOCCER CHICKS
The Soccer Chicks are not on our regular schedule. But we might meet them in the playoffs. The following report was compiled after their Thursday, February 27 game against Our Last Name was Taken:

SOCCER CHICKS TEAM OUTLOOK

Right off the bat, the team name makes you think, doesn't it? That's what happened to Our Last Name was Taken. As a result, the game was more psychological than physical. The Soccer Chicks are a decent team. But they're not all chicks. There is one guy on the team. I don't know what his business on the team is but already it's a lie. Anyhow the rest of the team consists of athletic chicks, couple of which are kinda cute. But in terms of basketball, the team was a good shooting team, with some weaknesses as well..

SOCCER CHICKS TEAM OFFENSE

They started off their game against O.L.N.w.T. cold, but eventually settled down into taking jumpshots from all over the court. A few airballs here, a few bricks there, but they did make a decent percentage. In other words, given the open look, they can put up a few points. Unfortunately, the score of the game was not kept, so it was pretty tough to gauge exactly how well the Chicks shot. But they did consistently look for the open shot and possessed the ability to burn you in certain situations. The team does hustle pretty well and can score on second-chance opportunities. But their weaknesses do include a lack of interior tenacity and ineffectiveness when driving the ball.

How to stop their offense

A strict man defense looks to be the best solution. The team likes to move around until an open shot is available. But there aren't very many picks set or kick-outs. Therefore, being able to keep up with the Chicks will most likely undermine their offensive system. Denying them open looks and running around with them should help in the containment. Remember, they do play soccer, so they appear to know how to get open. So if the occasional open shot is found, the ability to at least get to the loose rebound will come in handy. In short, a man defense with the necessary agility to keep up should stifle their jumpshot attack.

SOCCER CHICKS TEAM DEFENSE

In a word, the Soccer Chicks like to play dirty. They hack, they hammer, they look for the steal and can often get one. They'll fight for every loose ball, and though they can be outmuscled, they cannot be taken lightly. Yes, picks for open shots and a good motion offense, as usual can confuse the team enough, but in terms of straight-up one-on-one play, the Soccer Chicks can bring a very physical game. Down low the team showed the ability to hack away until a bad shot is taken or turnover is committed. But being able to drive the ball is one feature that can split this defense up.

How to break their defense

It seems as if the motiion offense and the Hobart-Gratton Baseline Three play can break any defense, but in the Soccer Chicks' case, it is quite evident. Now of course, simply driving and kicking out is likely to produce several points as well. But running such plays against a defense that is not as polished to guarding an offensive system as others is bound to be the best solution. While the Chicks will definitely bring hustle and tenacious D to the table, their overall lack of ability to cut through picks and recover on D in transition should cost them the chance to stay in most games. But get cute and watch the Chicks stuff you with their hacking ability.

FINAL ANALYSIS

Overall, to repeat, a game against the Soccer Chicks will likely be more psychological than physical. The Chicks possess an ability on offense to find the open person and take jumpshots. They do not drive much. While on D, they can hack away, but are prone to being beaten via picks, screens, and rolls. Running the good ol' motion offense can confuse this team. Outhustling and outmuscling down low on defense can prevent any easy layups for them and create some on the other end. Bottom line, the team can be defeated if composure and mental strength is kept.
