Why do Star Wars fans and Lord of the Rings fans pit themselves against one another?
Why do 49er fans pit themselves against Detroit Lions fans? They're both very good teams. Sometimes. [Laughs.] Don't confuse rooting for a team with disliking all the other teams. If all the other teams were really bad, it would not make the sport any fun, and it's the same thing with movies. If there was only one movie out there and it was Lord of the Rings, all those fans would be very depressed.
Did you enjoy The Lord of Rings?
I think Peter [Jackson] did a fantastic job of taking a very tough book and not only being really faithful to it but also making it cinematic. They used to come and visit us because we were in Australia and he was in New Zealand, and when they took their breaks, they'd all come over. That's what film people do on their days off--they go and visit other people's film sets.
