| Notes for WILLIAM GILBERT NEWTON: | ||||||||||
| "My dad was born and raised in Monroe Co. TN, one of 17 children 13 boys (were in the Civil War on the side of the North, William Gilbert on side of the South." Letter of Nellie Martin 3 Sep 1972. More of this letter in Nellie's entry. | ||||||||||
| At birth of a child 1885, Louisburg, MO Dr. said William was from Meigs, Co. TN. See source for Nora Newton. | ||||||||||
| That William was buried in Litchfield, Crawford, KS is from family lore of Paul Dempsey Newton, son of William Francis Newton. | ||||||||||
| William Gilbert Newtons' poorly filled out death certificate for this date says "Mrs. Newton" but it is the record for Williams death since Nellies letter states they lived in Litchfield at the time of her fathers death AND we have documented the death and location of Mrs. Amanda Newton, his second wife in Webb City MO, buried beside her son. Thus he is thought to be buried in the old Litchfield Cemetery in Crawford Co. KS not far from KOAM TV tower in Pittsburg, KS --where Litchfield was. A trip to this cemetery did not reveal a stone for William, and that is probably correct since the family was exceedingly poor and with many children when he died. We wonder why none of his children did not erect a stone later... Well, times were not easy back then! Nice Photo on photo page. |
