Notes for FLOYD GILBERT NEWTON:

Floyd was killed in an explosion of the Electric Light Mine in Joplin MO on his first day as a powder monkey.  He forgot to wet down the area before lighting it seems...

"I remember my Uncle Floyd's funeral, I had never been to one before, we rode to the grave yard in a surrey with the fringe around the top pulled by two brown horses. .... It is strange to me now, but at that time it seemed perfectly normal to have an open casket. (It wouldn't be done today I am sure.) He was buried in a Childs' coffin and all that showed was a strip of golden hair and all the rest was covered with a cloth. It made quite an impression on me. "  Letter 17 July 1983 to Rose and Jim Newton from Estella Martin.
