29. Obituary - Wilbur (Burney) Newton, Miami News Record July 20, 1926, Word was received of the death of Wilbur (Burney) Newton 37 of Webb City and a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Picher. Mr. Newton died yesterday mrning ot the tuberculosis sanatarium at Webb City after a long illness. Mr. Newton was well known throught the Pioneer districtic, having worked in the mines here for some time.Members of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Picher are reequested to meet at the lodge hall at one o'clock tomorrow afternoon to leave in a body for Webb City to attend the funeral which will be held at 2 O'clock. Mr. Newton was also a member of Knights of Pythia lodge and the American Legion . Burial will be in Mount Hope. (Joplin - Webb City). |

Mr. Newton was born Aug 31, 1902 at West Plains MO, the son of Henry and Emma Williams Newton. He lived in the Chetopa area most of his life. He had been a farmer retiring in 1973. He was a member of Chetopa First Baptist Church. His wife Myrtle Stark Newton, died Dec 14, 1983. His parents also precededhim in death. Surviving are one niece, Joyce McGill of Chetopa. She had worked as head cook in Miami and Chetopa school systems for several years before retiring in 1977.Survivors include one daughter, Johce McGill, Chetopa; one son George H. Darnell, Grove; one brother Roy Newton, Chetopa; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Greenlawn Cemetery, northwest of Treece, KS. The Rev. Ron Frazier will officiate. Burial under the direction of Thomas Funeral Home, Welch. Mermorial donations suggested to Chetopa Library.
