I stumbled upon this information while scouring the internet. Yes, Willighans were alive and well in Alabama in 1850, according to the census of that time. Click here to see RECORD 1 or here to see RECORD 2.

This site is a bit of a weird one. Speaking French helps. Basically it explains the history of the Bulldog, and it mentions a Georges Willighan, who lived in London in 1632, and was friends with a Preston Eaton, who lived in Spain. Eaton wanted Willighan to transport some English bulldogs to Spain to compare them with the local breed. Very strange. Click here if you have nothing better to do.
Research has led me to find documentation of a Private J. Willighan who died during the 1899-1902 Boer War in South Africa. There used to be a webpage detailing this info, but it is now defunct. However, I printed the page and have it in hard copy.

Cracker of a site, this one. Who knows where this could lead? Basically, there's a song, originally from Donegal, called "The Willighan Bush"! Click here for home page, then A Dossan of Heather, then Table of Contents. For more details of THE WILLIGHAN BUSH, click here.
