~ Just Robyn ~
I used to introduce myself as Amanda's or Matt's Mom or maybe Rick's wife, but now it's just Robyn. Last fall as I let go of a volunteer position in October and as my baby became a teenager in November, the thought of completing "me" began to climb the ladder of importance. Not that I don't know who I am, but more that the time is available for me to develop myself into the socially acceptable "self," you know the formally educated woman who earns a bankable income, not just two great assets for society. So, figuring that the first place to start this endeavor is with prioritizing the "get educated," here I am taking summer classes that seventeen years ago I did not prioritize.
The thing I like best in life is my FAMILY! It is a military family, so the fact that I love everything (okay, most everything, no one's perfect) about them comes in handy. Since every three years we move to some place new and the only people we know are each other. I have been married to a Navy Submariner for the last seventeen years and have two wonderful teenage children. The Navy stationed Rick, my husband to a Norfolk based submarine in late 2003. Since then Newport News is where we call home.
For fun I enjoy many things, even though many activities I no longer am able to participate in year round, the way I have in other areas of the world. The last year I have spent many hours everyday remodeling my home (during the overly humid and hot days) and yard (when the air outside can be breathed, not sucked!). The first room to receive updating was simple. My son, Matthew just wanted to have white walls, not the beige/mauve they were when we moved in. Other rooms have needed more work and required design. The largest single room that I have taken on has been the kitchen. Everything in there has been ripped-out and replaced. Gone are the yellow and laminate cabinets. Here to enjoy is the new maple cabinetry with bevel edged countertop all enveloped within walls the color of Grass Cloth. As for the yard out went the plank raised garden beds and in progress is the lush grass and extended driveway. Still in development are the retaining walls in back.
I plan to earn an AS in Social Science while I am at Thomas Nelson Community College. Then, continue my education, at either Old Dominion University or Christopher Newport University, where I will attain a BS in Social Work. When my primary education is complete, I hope to find employment within a school or community/social service entity.
Basically, I am an almost middle aged woman that loves being a mom. Who is expanding my life path, which for the last sixteen years has been reward ably filled with full-time homemaking. I hope to grow old with my husband, after retiring from my late career in social work.
