After Noon Breakfast |

There is nothing I like better than fresh, hot home-fries with breakfast. This is exactly what you will find when you order a breakfast entre at Angelo?s Steak and Pancake House, on J. Clyde Morris Blvd. in Newport News. Owner Angelo Theodorogiannis is originally from Greece; he came to the United States in 1974. In partnership with his brother, Nick, they opened Angelo?s Steak and Pancake House in 1984. |

My husband and I met each other at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Angelo?s parking lot. We had planned to have breakfast together earlier in the day, but our plans changed. When we entered the restaurant, a cheerful hostess greeted us and immediately seated us in the non-smoking section. As she gave us the menus, she also took our drink order (two waters, one with lemon and one without, and coffee; $1.65). Within a few minutes as our waitress introduced herself, the hostess returned with our beverages. |

We took to reviewing the menu, which has an ample assortment of choices plus a kid?s meal section. All the sandwiches ($3.55-$6.55) and hamburgers ($4.00 or less) come with your choice of shoestring, baked or mashed potatoes. The dinner entrees range from spaghetti ($6.95) to a 16-ounce New York strip ($16.95) or you could have the combination, a 6-ounce. NY strip and spaghetti ($14.95). We decided we would still order breakfast meals, which are served all day. I ordered the two eggs (over medium) and sausage breakfast ($3.95) with home-fries and English muffin. Rick ordered the steak (medium) and two-egg (easy) breakfast ($11.95) with buttered wheat toast and home-fries. He also ordered a side of bacon ($2.95 for seven pieces); none of the breakfast entres had a meat combination as a choice. |

As we waited for our meals, we took in our surroundings. The restaurant is furnished with what appears to be the original furniture, making you feel as though you can be relaxed and comfortable. It is sort of, like when you go to Grandma?s house and everything is as it has always been. If you sit in the smoking section, you will have a choice between eating at the front counter or in a booth. In the back of the restaurant, the non-smoking section has tables and booths. It is divided into two parts; one is decorated with original pieces of artwork that you can purchase; the other has sparsely placed oil paintings, reproductions from the 70s, on the walls. Beyond those two spaces, there is a banquet room that can accommodate functions for up to 150 people. |

The food arrived after a short wait, smelling and looking splendid. My home-fries were a crisp brown and steaming, the eggs had firm whites and gooey yellow centers, and the sausage was nicely browned as was the English muffin. Rick?s meal and plate full of bacon looked equally good. The only flaw to be commented on was Rick?s comment that he would have preferred his steak a little pinker, (it was ordered medium) otherwise his eggs had runny whites and the bacon was crisp and hot. He too was completely satisfied with his meal. |

Having breakfast in the afternoon can sometimes be a risky choice, but our experience at Angelo?s was fantastic! The staff was friendly, attentive, and thorough (our drinks were refreshed throughout the meal). They served first-class food at better than first-rate prices. What more could any one want? |
