In the lead up to the 2002 October elections, a coalition of Islamist parties (both Sunni and Shia) formed the Muttaheda Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) to challenge the other major political parties, the Pakistan Muslim League(PML) factions and Pakistan Peoples Party(PPP).
