| Misconceptions 1) If A Woman Lifts Weights, She Will Look Like A Man- This is simply not true. Big, bulky muscles require a level of testosterone that woman do not have. It is true that some woman have more muscle potential then other, however, most of these woman have a hormone imbalance or are using anabolic steroids which may be increasing their testosterone level. If you do have a hormone imbalance, chances are that you already know due to other masculine characteristics. You would be a special case and should be treated accordingly. Most woman do not have to worry about this problem. 2) Cardiovascular Exercise Burns The Most Fat- This is another huge mistake people make during exercise. Cardio exercise burns little to no fat. It is called "cardio" because it means heart exercise. It is good for your heart ,which is important, but it does not change the way you look. When your heartrate is too high, your body is working too hard to burn fat. Fat is hard to burn due to it's density. Your body is mostly going to burn carbohydrates and when those are gone it will burn protein/ muscle. This is bad for two reasons: A) You are not burning fat during the exercise itself. B) You are burning off muscle tissue which slows down your metabolism and causes you to burn off less fat the rest of the time. That is right. The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism and the more fat your body burns off during rest. Muscle uses fat as its' main fuel source. Every pound of muscle on your body burns about 5.5 grams of fat a day while resting. This does not mean to stay away from cardio. Walking is better in the long run for burning fat due to your lower heart rate. If you want to do hard cardio, keep it to short bursts such as sprints or running stairs. 3) I Should Do Cardio Before I Weight Train As A Warm-Up- If losing weight is your main concern, never do cardio first. If you start out doing cardio, you are likely to use up all of your carbohydrates. If you do this you will have none left for your weight training. If you do not have any carbohydrats left your muscles will not have any fuel to contract and you will get almost nothing out of your work out. As I said before, your muscles use fat as a fuel source while resting. This is not the case while exercising. During exercise they use carbohydrates as a fuel source. There must be ample carbs in your system to train properly. Drink some Gaterade, rest for 15 minutes and then do your cardio after weight training. 4) Olive Oil And Other Unsaturated Fats Are Good For Me- It is true that your body does need some fat. The problem is that just one tablespoon of olive oil has more fat in it then you need for a whole day. Unsaturated fat is not going to clog your arteries the way that saturated fat will, but it is still the same amount of calories. It will still make you put on fat. 5) Carbohydrates Are Bad For Me- Do not buy into fad diets. It is true that you will lose some fast weight if you cut down on your carbs. Unfortunately most of the weight you lose will be water or muscle. You will not get the tone look you are going for. As I told you before, during most exercise your body will use either carbohydrates or protein as a fuel source. Take away the carbs and it will still not burn fat. Almost everyone that loses weight on a low carb diet gains it all back very quickly. Low fat, high protein, and medium carbohydrates wins everytime in the long run. |
