| In October 2001,after consultation with The Great War Society we received permission to form the first Irish unit,a historic moment in this country as we now have a cross border unit which caters for anyone interested in the period. We also have non active, ununiformed members who partake in general research. We hope this new unit will open up many new avenues to all involved and would like to thank the Great War Society for allowing us to raise the new unit as part of their organisation.A formal meeting of the new unit took place in The Somme Heritage Center on the 1st December 2001 and it was decided that the two units to be represented were to be the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and the Royal Dublin Fusiliers under the common name of The Irish Company. The main aims of the unit are to educate people about the Great War and the Irish involvement which was a very unique situation in itself. As part of the Great War Society we hope to be a living testimony to the men and times of the 14-18 War.We stress the fact that this unit is in no way political or sectarian and in no way endorse any such views. We are open to new recruits and welcome anyone who is willing to be guided by the society constitution which is available upon request. Please see the links page for the Society web site or contact us through our guest book on the last page. |
