Daniel Bellion, 1st dan By Lena Strang, Solihull Judo Club Correspondent
How long have you been practising judo?
I have been practising judo since I was 7 years old. I started it because of my uncle who did judo.
Where do you train?
I train at Solihull and also at Neil Adams Club in Coventry.
What is your present training schedule?
I train four nights a week.
What are your favourite techniques?
I like Kata-Guruma and drop Seoi-Nage
Who has influenced you most in judo?
It is my Grandfather, Martin Matthews or 'Pops' as we call him, who used to run Christchurch Judo club in Shirley. He is incredibly supportive and has helped me throughout. He takes me to judo sessions and along with my mother checks that I eat the right diet and is a source of motivation for me. I owe him a great deal. Dave Walker is a practising judo player who has been a source of inspiration for me.
What are your achievements in judo?
I got my black belt when I was 15 and gained the Captaincy of the Great Britain Cadet Squad. I won silver at the Junior Nationals and Bronze in the German Open. I
recently got gold in the Irish Open in the under 21 category. I was pleased to get silver in the Senior event. I was entered onto Solihull Roll Of Honour as the first ever judo player. I was also awarded Player of the Year at Bishop Challoner School.
What are the real highlights of your judo career?
I think it must be gaining my black belt and being Captain of the Cadet Squad. I really enjoy being able to travel through judo. I have recently been to Germany, Holland, Belgium, France and Austria. In fact I went abroad twelve times last year!
As a sixth form student what are your ambitions?
I am able to study judo at the Martial Arts Academy at Bishop Challenor. I would like to teach judo in the future. I would like to join the army and teach unarmed combat.
What do you get out of judo?
I like to succeed in my sport and keep fit and active. I like to see the world and meet lots of different people. I did have to make sacrifices for judo. I used to play rugby for North Midlands but had to drop it. But it has definitely been worth it.
What are the secrets of your success?
I have the desire to win and to be the best. I think I have lots of determination and perseverance. But I also enjoy my judo - I think that's important.
What other interest or hobbies have you got?
I play rugby and Gaelic football. I like socialising with my mates and I like good food!
What are you aiming for next?
I want to win the number one position in the under 100 kg category at the British Closed. I would also like to compete in the Commonwealth Games in 2006.
Any thoughts you would like to offer?
Have fun with judo - don't take it too seriously at first and don't be pressurised. If you find you have a talent go for it!
