Lena Strang 2nd dan

Lena Strang

is our Player of the Month

Lena is one of our regular, experienced players at the club. Although a member of Solihull, she has trained at a number of clubs in the Midlands over the years. She can be described as a somewhat ferocious player, not unlike a stick of dynamite about to explode! However, she is always friendly off the mat! And enjoys a pint of beer after training whilst she explains to men judoka just how she manages to throw them on a regular basis .

By our assistant Solihull Judo Correspondent
Roy Muller

How long have you been training judo?

"I think it must be about 28 years now."

Why did you start judo?

"I was a student living in Finland then. I had a friend at the time who was very keen on judo. He persuaded me to go along. I really liked the sport and havent looked back since!"

What are your main influences in judo?

"When I came to England I was impressed with developments in womens judo and the standards achieved. Women judo players like Jane Bridge and Karen Briggs were a real inspiration to me. I first started judo at Bushido Club in Great Barr and found Pat and Frank Elrington very supportive. Pete Barnett always made me feel welcome at Solihull."

How is judo in England different to Finland?

"Judo in Scandinavia is more technical while here there is more of an emphasis on competition. I think in many ways there were more opportunities for me to develop my judo in England."

What are your achievements in judo?

"I was a member of the British Team and during this time was able to train in Japan. I took part in the World Masters Championships in Sydney, Nova Scotia last June and won the gold in my weight."

Tell us about your training in Japan.

"I managed to get five weeks off work to go and train in Japan. I lived with a Japanese family and trained at the Kodokan every day. The highlight was watching the All Japan Championships and seeing Yamashita beat Saito in the final. Beats any World Cup!"

Whats your present training schedule?

"I train regularly at Solihull and also visit Coventry Club."

What are your favourite techniques?

"Seoi-nage and o-uchi-gari. I like ground work and do strangles and arm locks lots of them!"

What would you say your judo was like?

"I think I go for speed, aggression and sheer determination!"

Have you got any other hobbies?

"Yes, I go to the gym regularly and do swimming, cycling and scuba diving. I also like travelling, photography and reading."

What do you do for a living?

"I started off as a teacher of English. Being a Swedish speaking Finn, I thought that seemed appropriate! Now I work as a Deputy Headteacher in a secondary school in Halesowen."

What are your ambitions?

"I would like to get my third dan and retain the World Masters title."

Any final words of wisdom?

"Never give up - you can do it!"
