The British Kurash Tournament 2003
19th October, 2003, High Wycombe
|
Solihull Judo club was again well represented at the national Kurash Tournament at High Wycombe. The event has grown each year with a large junior entry and with a number of Senior and Masters categories. About a dozen eager Uzbec players added an extra edge to the event! With no groundwork or leg grabs and with the equivalent of only wazaris and ippons scored, Kurash is a superb spectator sport. Throughout the day, plenty of spectacular techniques were seen. The undisputed star of the event had to be Roy Muller, gaining gold in his category and silver in the Open. His style of judo is well suited to Kurash - and he was on form all day! None of his opponents, including an Uzbec player, could argue with his foot sweeps and hip throws. In the Open event he faced Mark Donnelly in a closely fought final but had to concede victory in the end. Mark from 3Ks Club was also in superb form during the day, winning two gold medals. Clive Douglas fought well and won gold in his category. Danny Broughton certainly deserved his gold in the +100kg category. In the first round all the competitors had equal points and had to do re-fights. Danny dominated this time and won all his fights by ippon, emerging the clear winner. Clive Biggs added to the medal haul by winning silver in the Masters event and bronze in the Senior category. Lena Strang also won silver in the Masters event. Medal winners were presented with gold embroidered ceremonial robes by the Ambassador of Uzbekistan. All in all, a good days work for Solihull Club.

BRITISH KURASH TOURNAMENT 2002 12th October 2002 High Wycombe
|
Solihull players took part in the 3rd National Kurash Tournament held at High Wycombe.
Lena Strang achieved gold in the Masters event and Clive Biggs got bronze in the Senior event and silver in the Masters category. Medal winners were presented with gold embroidered ceremonial robes by the Ambassador of Uzbekistan. It was a colourful and spectator friendly event.. Kurash is a form of ancient wrestling originating in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. It is similar to standing judo but without groundwork. Competitors fight in green or blue jackets, representing the colours of the Uzbek national flag. During the day some spectacular techniques were seen and very few fights ever went to time. Kurash is gaining international recognition as a sport in its own right. The British wing of the Kurash Association was formed in 1999. Web site: www.kurash-ika.org |
