The best thing about Peter Barnett is the way he can control an entire room of crashing riotous activity whilst appearing completely nonchalant. There could be 30 judoka in full randori and Pete knows exactly how much each is giving and each can take.

Pete always sees when you make a stupid `pratfall' (of which I did many) and apparently is always looking the other way when you make an half-way-decent attack (of which I did few).

Pete's training sessions are infinitely variable - he always brings something new - occasionally bizarre to the fitness sessions - I remember sprinting to fetch golf balls. When one goes training one never knows what to expect, but you know if you are late it will hurt!

I discovered judo late in life having done no sport but that first session was so much fun and Pete's club so welcoming that I knew I was hooked. For the next five years Pete praised, cajoled and encouraged my pursuit of a black belt, praising and despairing of my efforts by turn. Through all the fights, training and gradings, that belt wasn't mine until Pete said it was.

To me he was and will remain the definitive coach
