Daron Gay 1st Dan

Birmingham

Following my return to Judo in 1997, after a 10 year break, I started training under the sole supervision of Peter Barnett. After gaining my 1st Kyu at the age of 16 in 1981 my immediate goal was that of gaining my 1st Dan.

Peter's natural ability of effectively teaching the fundamentals of Judo e.g. stance, hold, weight distribution etc. enabled me to construct a sound basis from which to build upon.

Over the following months Peter expanded my now extensive knowledge and ability of Judo. Fortunately, this was possible due to Peter's vast experience at national / world judo level. Past students like Keith Canaby, Ron Knight, Dave Walker etc. proved that the words I was now hearing were correct and had been tried and tested at every level.

After the first 12 months I entered a Dan grading. Unfortunately, I was stopped by my second fight after eventually getting to a line up. An excellent result for a person having a 10 year break.

Following another few weeks training I entered another grading in London. This event appeared to be a mere formality with 2 straight ippons giving me my cherished Black Belt.

I continue to practice Judo on regular basis under Peter Barnett. This special individual has an unlimited wealth of knowledge and expertise that is passed on to all members of Solihull Judo Club. This coupled with his strong personal feelings and inner commitment towards teaching the true meaning of Judo is a lesson for us all to follow.

Please take the above as my personal recommendation to the BJA to regrade Peter to the highest level possible.
