European Masters' Championships
|
The long awaited European Masters Championships organised by the European Judo Union took place in Britain this year. The entry of 660 players included a sizeable contingent from a variety of European countries. Masters events are now attracting large numbers of players and the standard of judo remains high. Solihull Judo Club was again well represented. Clive Douglas u. 95 kg had an excellent day and won the coveted European title in his weight. Joyce Malley u. 63 kg won her fights convincingly but in the final came up against her old adversary, Paola Di Luigi (Italy) and in the end achieved silver. She also gained bronze in the Open. Lena Strang who had gone down a weight to u. 48 kg had to fight in an amalgamated pool (F1, 2, 3, 5,and 8). She managed to hold her own and achieved silver. Stan Cantrill u. 73 kg also fought well winning silver in his own category and silver in the Open. Dave Walker fought in the under 100 kg category. This was his first competition after the World Masters in June, only having had his second hip operation a few months ago. We can only admire Dave's sheer determination and will power.
Clive Biggs u .66kg had some tough fights in his category and emerged 7th overall. Andy Marshall u. 73 kg a regular at the Solihull Club from Erdington, managed to get silver. The players fought well, despite some particular circumstances surrounding the competition which made it hard to sustain peak performances. The event was marred from the very beginning, including the long wait at the weigh-in, by inefficient organisation by the EJU causing players distress and discomfort. It is hoped that constructive feed-back to the EJU by a number of players will result in more efficient and player-friendly European tournaments in the future.

The first Open British Masters Championships took place at the new competition venue at Burgess Hill on Sunday 25th April 2004. As a new Masters event, the entry for the British Open was lower than expected. However, with the players that were represented, including some excellent international competitors, there was some superb judo to be seen.
Two Solihull players took part:
Well done Danny and Lena! |

Solihull Judo Club was out in full force for the second Multi-nations of Europe Championships held at the splendid UEA Sports-Park in Norwich. Although the entry was smaller than anticipated, there were participants from several European countries along with representatives from Scotland and Ireland. As with all Masters events the standard of judo was high. Solihull Judo club members did well on the day. Dave Walker (u. 100kg) was back on form and breezed his way through to gold. He won all his fights by ippon and met his old adversary, Tom Moyse from Newcastle in the final. It was a hard fought match but Dave emerged the clear winner. Lena Strang (u52/u.56kg) had a good day. She fought well in the amalgamated category and won all her fights by ippon gaining gold. She also got bronze in the Open event. Clive Biggs (u.63kg) never does anything by halves! He had a series of hard fights, some of which went to 'golden time'. In the end he achieved bronze. Roy Muller (u.73) battled it out in a younger age category and came away with bronze. He was also awarded gold in his own category. Clive Douglas (u.90kg) had some tough fights in his weight and gained bronze. Daniel Broughton (over 100kg) achieved silver in his category.
It was noted that the club is gaining a loyal following. Debbie Berrows was there in full support, kitted out in a specially designed T-shirt, which no doubt spurred club members on! Again, well done to all Solihull club members. You keep doing us proud! |

Welsh Masters Judo Championships
Chester 15th November, 2003 Well done to Danny Broughton who gained gold in the Welsh Masters Championships. Danny, who was the only one to fly the flag for Solihull Judo Club, fought his way through a combined pool of five. He was up against a number of British Masters medallists but came out on top. The specially engraved trophies for the winners proved highly popular! After Danny's recent string of successes, we shall watch this space! |

This particular annual Masters event was buzzing as many of the competitors are getting themselves ready for the World Masters Championships in Japan, in only a few weeks time. The standard of judo was again very high with some spectacular techniques in evidence throughout the day.
Solihull Judo Club was represented by Clive Biggs, Dave Walker and Lena Strang. Clive Douglas, our regular visitor from Northampton also took part. Clive Biggs fought in the u. 66 kg category and gained silver, having lost only one fight through an armlock from Tomeo-nage. Lena Strang u. 57 kg won her first contest arm locking her opponent from Tomoe-nage in the first 30 seconds of the fight. A useful technique after all! She lost by koka in the final and came away with silver. Clive Douglas had to go up one weight to u. 90 kg but still managed to achieve a well earned bronze. Well done Solihull club members
We wish Dave Walker, Martin Bullus, Joyce Malley, Lena Strang and Clive Douglas the best of luck in Japan. |

Clive Douglas - u/100kg - did well. He beat all his opponents but lost in the final to a Commonwealth Bronze medalist on penalities.
Another very good day's work for Solihull Judo Club |
|
25th May, 2002
|
Lena won silver in the u. 57 kg category, losing to Rachel Matthews (3rd Dan) from Southampton. History almost repeated itself as Lena beat Rachel in the final last year scoring under the `golden rule' while this year Rachel got the `golden score'. Clive Douglas won silver in his category while Clive Biggs battled it out in big style. One of his fights went to 8 minutes with extra time, and then he lost on decision, 2-1! Clive's response was measured: "I really didn't mind. At least I got good value for my entrance fee." |

Solihull representatives at this major event were Gary Knight and Daniel Bellion We are pleased to report that Gary won silver. He tells us: "I won all my fights by ippon except obviously the last one. I was winning that one and was well on my way to gold with a '7' and '5' but lost to ippon in the last 24 seconds"
We are delighted to hear your news, Gary. Keep it coming. |
