BJC National Competition
Hereford
Sunday 20 November 2005

Clive Biggs reports:

Just thought I'd let you know I entered another competition, the last for this year.
I entered the BJC Nationals with Erdington Judo Club on Sunday 20 November at Hereford.
I entered the U66Kg Dan Grade Seniors (they don't have masters) and won bronze. One other U66Kg player was over forty the rest were under 25 in fact most were under 20.
The rest of the Erdington team did very well (lots of medals) and in the U73Kg we took:

Gold (Andy Marshall)
Silver (Craig Homer)
Bronze (Adam Ashford)

European Masters' Championships
The Triangle, Burgess Hill
28-30 October 2005

Clive Douglas Champion of Europe

Joyce Malley (on the left) silver

Lena Strang (on the left) silver

The opening ceremony

The long awaited European Masters Championships organised by the European Judo Union took place in Britain this year. The entry of 660 players included a sizeable contingent from a variety of European countries. Masters events are now attracting large numbers of players and the standard of judo remains high.

Solihull Judo Club was again well represented.

Clive Douglas u. 95 kg had an excellent day and won the coveted European title in his weight.

Joyce Malley u. 63 kg won her fights convincingly but in the final came up against her old adversary, Paola Di Luigi (Italy) and in the end achieved silver. She also gained bronze in the Open.

Lena Strang who had gone down a weight to u. 48 kg had to fight in an amalgamated pool (F1, 2, 3, 5,and 8). She managed to hold her own and achieved silver.

Stan Cantrill u. 73 kg also fought well winning silver in his own category and silver in the Open.

Dave Walker fought in the under 100 kg category. This was his first competition after the World Masters in June, only having had his second hip operation a few months ago. We can only admire Dave's sheer determination and will power.
After three fights, winning one, he had to withdraw with an injured shoulder.

Clive Biggs u .66kg had some tough fights in his category and emerged 7th overall.

Andy Marshall u. 73 kg a regular at the Solihull Club from Erdington, managed to get silver.

The players fought well, despite some particular circumstances surrounding the competition which made it hard to sustain peak performances. The event was marred from the very beginning, including the long wait at the weigh-in, by inefficient organisation by the EJU causing players distress and discomfort. It is hoped that constructive feed-back to the EJU by a number of players will result in more efficient and player-friendly European tournaments in the future.

British Masters Championships
17th September, 2005
UEA Sports Park, Norwich

GOLD for Clive Biggs

GOLD for Danny Broughton - and this is how I did it!

Stan Cantrill - Rob Holden - Mick Waldron - Lena Strang - Clive Biggs - Danny Broughton - Adrian Holt

Danny Broughton - Joyce Malley - Lena Strang - Clive Biggs

There was a record entry for the British Masters this year. Over 190 competitors battled it out in an event where more skilful judo was in evidence than ever before. The forthcoming European Championships at Burgess Hill in November and the inclusion of a Masters section in the Commonwealth Games in June may have contributed to the increased interest.
Solihull Club members were also there in full force and came away with an incredible haul of medals.
Danny Broughton o.100kg was in excellent form. He beat all his opponents convincingly, winning gold.
Clive Biggs u.66 kg. also had a superb day gaining gold in his category. Not content with his win, he also entered the u. 73 kg category, in order to secure a few more bouts - he always was a sucker for punishment!
Joyce Malley u.63 kg. disposed of all her opponents in a decisive manner, beating Rebecca Swift from the Midlands in the final.
Lena Strang u.52 kg. fought in a combined pool. She beat the eventual gold medallist Kerrie Sandy (NHC) but in the end had to concede on points, gaining silver.
Adrian Holt u.81 kg. (Coventry) secured bronze in a tough category of 21 players. He fought well, only losing to Mick Waldron (Midlands) on penalty in the semi final. Mick had a hard fight against Simon Woods (Wales) in the final but had to concede, gaining silver.
Tony Sarwar u. 73 kg. and Chris Bowen u. 73 kg. also entered and fought well in their respective categories.

Other players associated with Solihull did well:
The new slim-line Stan Cantrill at u. 73 kg. had to go up a weight! He still did well gaining bronze.
Erdington Club were very visible in their spanking new tracksuits and cleaned the board in many weights. Andy Marshall and Craig Homer u. 73 kg., both regulars at Solihull, ended up fighting each other in the final, with Andy clinching gold.
Well done everybody! We are pleased that so many Solihull players are involved in competitive judo and making their mark on the national scene. Fly your flags with pride!

On Saturday 25th September 2004, the annual National Veterans' Championships took place at High Wycombe. Masters events are becoming increasingly popular and it was no surprise to learn that this was the highest entry for the national event to date.
Solihull Club members and associates turned up in force and battled for medals and places on the Masters squad.

Dave Walker (u. 100kg) fought well throughout the day. He inevitably came up against his old adversary Tommie Moyse and this time had to concede victory, coming away with silver.
Clive Douglas (u. 86kg ) also had some tough fights. He fought Simon Woods in his pool and lost to him in the final, gaining silver.
Roland Newson (u. 81kg ) added to the medal haul by arm-locking his way to the final where in the end he lost to Dave Cooper. There were no easy fights for Lena Strang (u. 52/57kg) either. She lost to Rachel Matthews in golden time and to Simone Strong, gaining a bronze.
Danny Broughton (o. 100kg) gained bronze in his weight category.
Tony Sarwar (u. 73 kg) entered his first Masters competition. He fought well on the day gaining bronze. We hope to see him in more competitions in the future and wish him best of luck.

The first Open British Masters Championships
took place at the new competition venue at Burgess Hill on Sunday 25th April 2004. As a new Masters event, the entry for the British Open was lower than expected. However, with the players that were represented, including some excellent international competitors, there was some superb judo to be seen.

Two Solihull players took part:
Danny Broughton over 100kg fought in a pool of four. With two good wins he secured the bronze medal.
Lena Strang fought in a combined category (57kg/63kg). She beat all her opponents but in the final had to concede victory to a Canadian player, coming away with silver.

Although the entry was smaller than anticipated, there were participants from several European countries along with representatives from Scotland and Ireland. As with all Masters events the standard of judo was high.

Solihull Judo club members did well on the day.

Dave Walker (u. 100kg) was back on form and breezed his way through to gold. He won all his fights by ippon and met his old adversary, Tom Moyse from Newcastle in the final. It was a hard fought match but Dave emerged the clear winner.

Lena Strang (u52/u.56kg) had a good day. She fought well in the amalgamated category and won all her fights by ippon gaining gold. She also got bronze in the Open event.

Clive Biggs (u.63kg) never does anything by halves! He had a series of hard fights, some of which went to 'golden time'. In the end he achieved bronze.

Clive Douglas (u.90kg) had some tough fights in his weight and gained bronze.

Daniel Broughton (over 100kg) achieved silver in his category.
