Atendendo aos pedidos dos leitores, que desde 1979 acompanham essa vota��o, inclu�mos - ap�s o nome do primeiro colocado em cada categoria - o t�tulo do disco pelo qual o artista foi avaliado, com base apenas em lan�amentos realizados no decorrer deste ano.

Para variar, foram necess�rias v�rias semanas para a prepara��o de todas estas listas, reouvindo discos, revendo DVDs, checando fichas t�cnicas e, �s vezes, reavaliando opini�es. Tudo isso com o objetivo de fornecer o mais fiel poss�vel retrato do cen�rio jazz�stico em 2003, a partir de bases reais de an�lise. O que significa, por exemplo, que artistas que n�o lan�aram novos trabalhos este ano tornaram-se, por mais geniais que sejam, automaticamente ineleg�veis. Tal crit�rio explica a aus�ncia de feras como Sonny Rollins, Diana Krall, Urbie Green, Jimmy Smith e Claus Ogerman, entre muitos outros.
