Alone
Perhaps alone is
Sitting, eating, reading without company
   At CSU Chico
Or is it when a strange guy
Ambles past you, eating an ice cream cone
   Gives you a once over
then twice again as he goes
   And you are frightened
   Because he's strange
See the looks others give you
    "Looser," "how sad," "weirdo"
   And not entirely caring
Knowing we are  each sad
In our own uniquely pathetic way
The high school kids who enjoy only your age and freedom
The boys in Star Wars T-shirts
   Who don't give a flying-flip
Or is alone that there are others
   Other sitting, eating, reading
   In this very hallway
   Each at their own bench
Is alone that we never join
Or are we really secure enough
   To sit by ourselves
   Take the looks
   And try not to care
