Moon Lore
Man has always been fascinated with the Moon. It's beauty and it's affect on people. There are many lores about the moon from many different types of people throughout time. Each month I will feature the Moon lore and this and that for the current Moon. Enjoy!
April: Growing Moon
* Two New Moons in one month were said to predict bad weather.
* Any New Moon on a Saterday or Sunday was said to predict rain and general bad luck.
* Good luck will come your way if you see the New Moon outside and over your right shoulder. You can also make a wish that will be granted. The best luck came from looking at the moon straigth on.
* A ring around the moon means rain or snow.
* If you move to a new house or location during a waning moon, it will ensure you never go hungry.
* I medieval Europe and England, "Moon's men" were thieves and highwaymenwho plied their trade by night. The current term, moonlighting" is similar, meaning to hold down and additional job.
* In certain parts of England, the term, "Moonrakers" eventually came to mean simple-minded people. The factual story behind this , though, reveals some pretty fast thinking by local smugglers. The English excise men(a combination of border control, ATF, and IRS) were out at night, trying to catch the smugglers red-handed. Hearing the excise men coming, the smugglers sank their loot in a lake and pretended to be fishing for the Moon reflected in the water. When the excise men asked what they were doing, the smugglers innocently replied that they were raking for the moon. The excise men went away shaking their heads over the stupidity of the local folk, while the smugglers fished up their goods and went on with their bussiness.
