2nd Grade Benchmarks

Math

By the end of Second Grade, all students should be able to:

  • Know place values to 100
  • Count 2�s, 5�s and relate it to multiplication facts
  • Divide a given shape into equal parts including 1/2 and 1/4
  • Add and subtract 1 and 2 digit numbers with and without regrouping
  • Know addition and subtraction facts to 18
  • Read and interpret simple charts and graphs
  • Be able to determine the correct time to the hour and half-hour with an analog and digital face clock
  • Recognize and extend a simple pattern
  • Identify various geometric figures and identify the number of sides in a given figure
  • Solve a story problem requiring addition and subtraction of one to two digit whole numbers
  • Identify coins and their value
  • Identify odd and even numbers
  • Identify the number that is greater then or less than a given number and compare two numbers using greater than, less than and equal to 100
  • Identify ordinal words up to 100 (first, second, etc.)

Reading

By the end of Second Grade, all students should be able to:

I. Read a variety of age appropriate texts
  • Use the structural analysis (phonics) to identify and spell words
  • Use context clues to identify unfamiliar words and understand written text
  • Identify long and short vowels in words
  • Identify consonant blends (bl, cl, str, etc.) and digraphs (wh, ch, sh, th) in words
II. Gather, analyze and apply information from materials not less than one grade level below the second grade level
  • Read, view, listen to and evaluate written, visual and oral communications
  • Identify the main idea in a passage
  • Distinguish between reality and fantasy
  • Draw conclusions from written materials
  • Predict Outcomes
  • Read and identify literary elements of setting, plot and characters in literature
  • Sequence events in chronological order
III. Communicate thoughts, ideas and information in written form
  • Attempts to use the 5 step writing process
    • Prewriting
    • Rough draft
    • Edit
    • Rewriting
    • Publish
  • Writing and editing of a rough draft should include:
    • A graphic organizer (a prewriting activity)
    • Edit a series of sentences for errors, including: capitalizatoin, and end punctuation, using complete sentences and identifying unrelated and irrelevant information
