By the end of 1st Grade, all students should be able to:
- Know place value to the ones and tens place
- Identify, count and write numbers to 100 by 1�s, 5�s and 10�s
- Be able to add or subtract numbers vertically and horizontally
- Know addition and subtraction facts to 12
- Be able to tell time to the hour and half-hour with an analog and digital face clock
- Be able to identify and extend a designated pattern
- Be able to identify basic shapes and solids (squares, circles, triangle and rectangle)
- Know to use addition or subtraction to solve a number sentence and explain the answer
- Understand and use words for size, amount and position
- Identify and attempt to count pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters
- Determine if numbers are greater, lesser or equal
- Identify shapes or groups using equal parts of 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4
Reading
By the end of 1st Grade, all students should be able to:
I. Read a variety of age appropriate texts
- Apply basic letter-sound relationships
- Use structural clues (phonics) to identify and spell words
- Identify long and short vowels in words
- Identify consonant blends (bl, cl, str, etc.) and digraphs (wh, ch, sh, th) in words
- Recognize and use rhyming words
- Spell and use the 25 accountability words
II. Gather, analyze and apply information from materials not less than one grade level below the current grade level
- Read, view, listen to and evaluate written, visual and oral communications
- Attempt to identify the main idea in a passage
- Distinguish between reality and fantasy
- Attempt to draw conclusions from written materials
- Read Pre-primer and Primer Dolch list
- Read and identify literary elements of setting, plot and characters in literature
- Retell and sequence events in chronological order
III. Communicate thoughts, ideas and information in written form
- Attempts to use the 5 step writing process
- Prewriting
- Rough draft
- Edit
- Rewriting
- Publish
- Writing and editing of a rough draft should include:
- Write a complete sentence
- Attempts to use capitalization and end punctuation correctly
- Attempts to write a story with a beginning, middle and end
